Napav DuTreLL. Extralt of a letter from a gentleman at Leipfic, to his Friend in Holland. “ O my friend, how happy is yourlot! Providence has placed you in a fpot where you may with eafe and fafety enfoy the fweets of your labour ; here all is in confu- fion ; noman can call what he has his own ; furrounded by numerous armies, expofed to the fury of alicentious foldiery ; unable to affift our friends, and having every thing to dread from our enemies, our cafeis truly de- plorable ; taxed by friends and foes beyond our abilities ; threatened with military ex- ecation for not doing impotlible things ; friends, relations, and countrymen, butcher- ed daily before our eyes ; no fafety at home, and nofecurity in flight if that were praéti- cable. How long, Great GOD ! wilt thou pleafe to punifh this infatuated country with the dreadful fcourge of war ? Fathersarmed againft their fons, fons againft their fathers, and brothers againft brothers ; unanimous but in one thing, the deftruétion of their country. If the defcription is thocking to you, what muft it be to me, who have the reality hourly before my eyes 2 What a dreadful tale muft we tell children yetun- born, how paint the miferies of a civil war : See, my friend, the mifchiefs arifing from the ambition of a few men, minifters fporting with their mafters whims, and the repofe of millions facrificed tothe caprices of afew ; afew inches of territory the objeét of debate, and millions laid wafte to obtain that end : the fthadow purfued, but the fubftance neg- lected. “ Whoever conquers, a few only can be made happy, and thoufands miferable ; de- tefted fruit of conqueft, that cannot be ob- tained without theruin of thoufands. Was it for this that God gave underftinding be- yond the brute ? Do they wage deftrutive war againft each other, deftroy their fellow creatures without provocation ; when hun- ger or luft aflails, then indeed they {pill blood: but man, without this wretched excufe, de- ftroys bis kind. Take warning, my friend, by our calamities. I cannomore----Heaven give us Peace ! 2R N2 00020 0 002 St. Chriftopher’s Gazette, Auguft 15.
