Oa the Evening of the sth, they began their March ard reached Sabbath Day Point about one o'clock, wher they encamped till the Morning of the 7th, at which Time marched again, and arrived at the landing Place about 8 o’clock in the Moruing, and haited on a Point of Land on the Eaftfide, near Matton Ifland, where they in- tended to form an Ambufcade, and endeavour to draw out a Party from the Fort, by a few fculking Perfons who were to return again to the main Body.—That at g o clock they fent out two - Raogers and two Indians to reconnoitre, that the Major might the better effect his Defigns ; they feturned about 11 o'clock and reported, that there was po Party out on the Weft fide, but on the Fafifide there were two Parties cutting of Weod. It then appearinga good Time for the Engineer t0 make his Obfervations, &c. Capt. Wylliamos was ordered to remain with the Regulars, and thirty Rangers, whilft the Major with the Engi- neer and forty nine Rangers, and Capt. Lotterige, with 45 Indians fhould go to the Hill on the Ifthmus that overlooks the Fort ; where Major Rogers left Licut. Tute, and ten Rangers as 2 Guard, with an [ntent to crofs the Lake with the » emainder to the Eaftfide, and cut oft the working Party that Night.—That when he came near the Lske, he found that he could not get over undif- covered in the Day Time, therefcre returned to the Engineer, who was left to make Obfervation of the Fort, &c.—and with him, and the whole Party, marched back to the point where Capt. Wylliamos was, firft leaving five Indians and one Ranger to obferve what Nambers croffed the Lake in the Evening, from the Eaflfide to the Fort.— That about dark the Indians and Rangers return- ed with an exa& Account of their Numbers, at which Time the Engineer fet out again with Lieut. Tute and 10 Rangers, and went to the En- trenchment, from whence he returned about Midnight, withouat any Moleftation, and faid, he had accomplifhed kis Bufiacfs to his Satisfaltion. That upon this, the Major ordered Capt. Wyllia- mos, with the Regulars, back to Sabbath Day Point, as the Weather was exceflive cold and the Party much fatigued, it did net appear prudent to march them any further, therefore fent with them Lieut. Tute and thirty Rangers, as occafional Pilots, or flanking Parties.—That at 3 o’ clock the Major marched with Capt. Lotteridge and 46 of his Indians, with Lieuts. Holmes, Stark, and Brewer, and forty of his Rangers, and one Re- gular. in_order to attackk the working Uarty, on the Eaftfide early in the Moroing, ap! croffed South Bay, eight Miles South of the Fort, from thence bore down the fame till they were 9ppo- fite the Fort on the Eaftfide, where they hahed within half a Mile of the Lake, from whence fent out two Indians to reconnoitre, who returned in 2 few Minutes, and brought Intelligence, that the Working Party was clofe to the Bank of the Lake oppofite to the Fort.—Upon which they ftripped off their Blankets, and ran down upon them, took {even Prifoners, four fcalps, and killed feveral o- thers as they were retreating to.the Fort, where- upon eighty Indians and Canadians rathed out of the Fort, and purfued our Men clofely, being * backed by about 150 F rench Regulars.—That in . * sbout one Miles March the Indians and Canadi- and began to play on their ), Fowe, of whom this Rear, as they marched ina Line breft, their Front was eafily made, and halted on a rifing Ground, and engaged the Enemy, who behaved with great Bravery for a little Time, but foon found that they could not ftand before our Marksmen, till their Reinforcement could come up, and was obliged to fcatter and run for it. That after thisthe Major began his March again in a Line a breaft, and when he had proceeded about half a Mile ferther, the Enemy appeared in fight agsin but he did not choofe to engage them there, and went a little further, and halted on a long Ridge on that fide, oppofite to the Enemy, when the Canadians and Indi- ans came up very clofe, but their Purfuit was foon ftopt by a Volley from the Mohawk’s and Rangers. which broke them immediately, when Part of Roger’s Detachment purfued them, till they were in fight of the French Regulars, where the French made a Stand, ~—That afterwards he marched off without any Oppo- fition, the Enemy not daring to purfue him any further. —That in thefe feveral {kirmifhes they had z Rangers and 1 Regular killed, and one Indian badly wounded, and judged to have killed about thirty of the Enemy.”’ We can further affure the Publick, that Major Roger’s Party in general, both Officers and Men be- haved extremely well, and efpecially Capt. Lotteridge and Lieut. Holmes, who ftrove to exceed each other, both of whom behaved with great Bravery and Cool- nefs during the whole Affair.—That he continued his Retreat till 12 0° clock at Night, and at the End of fifty Miles March, from where he fet out in the Morn- ing, joined Capt. Williamos at Sabbath Day Point, who had kindled Fires for his Reception, which were, no Doubt, very acceptable to the Party.—And that next Morning he marched as far as Long Ifland, on the Lake, with the whole Detachment, where he encamp- ed, from which Place he fent an Exprefs to Col. Hal- diman, at Fort Edward, and was met the next Morning at Lake George, by Capt. M*Bein, with a Detachment who brought fome Slays to carry the difabled men to Fort Edward, where they all arrived the Evening of the 1oth.
