Porbes, of Petincrieft, Efg; in the Shire of Fife, > in Scotland, Brigadier General,” Colanel of\ the 17th Regiment of Foot, and Commander of His Majefty’s Troops in the Southern Provinces of North® America, a Gentlemaa generally koown and efteemed, and 'moft fipcerely and -univerfally lamented. § In his younger Days he was bred to the Profeffion of Phyfic; but early ambitious of the Military Charatter, he purchafed into the Regiment of Scors Grey Dragaons, where, by repeated Purchafes and faithful Services, he | arrived to the Rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His fuperior Abilities foon reeommended him to the Prote@ion of General Campbell, the Earl of Stair, Duke of Bedford, Lord Ligonier, and other ditinguith- ed Charafters in the Army ; with fome of them he ferved asan Aid de Camp, and with the reft in the Familiarity of a Family Man. Dauring the lalt War he had the Honour to be em- ployed in the Charater of a Quarter Mafter General to the Army under his Royal Highnefsthe DUKE; which Duty he difcharged with Accuracy, Dignity and Difpatch. His Services in America are well' known. By a fteady Purfuit of well concerted Meafures, in Defiance "of Difeafe, and numberlefs Obftru&tions, he brough: to a happy Iflue a moft extraordinary Campaign, and made a willing Sacrifice of his own Life to what he valued 4 more, the Intereft of his King and Country. As a Man he was juft, and without Prejudices ; brave, without Oftenation ; uncommonly warm in his Friend- ip, and incapable of Flattery ; acquainted with the orld and Mankind ; he was well bred, but abfolute- ® impatient of Formality and Afte&tation. Eminently peflefled of the fociable Vertues, he in- dulged a chearful Gratification ; but quick in his Senle of Honour and Dauty, fo mixed the agreeable Gentle- man and Man of Bufinefs together, as to fhine alike (tho’ truly uncommon) in both Character:, without the . nefs of the other. ‘and uleful Meafures, generally feeing both at firlk View according to their real Qualities ; fteady in his Mea- {ures, but open to Information and Ceuncil ; in Com- mand he had Dignity, without Supercilioufnefs, and tho’ perfeltly Mafter of the Forms, mever hefitated to drop them, when the Spirit and more eflential Parts of the Service required it. We hear that a Company of Men with Snow Shoes fet out from Deerfield on the 21ft, in order to relieve the Fort,which we are inform’d was able to hold out feveral Days, provided the Inba- bitants were in Garrifon ; which at prefent is uncertain, _ or what Fate has befallen ’em.
