The Hccho frigate is arrived at Ply- mouth, being difpatched exprefs from Agmiral Bol- cawen, with advice that the faid Admiral and Sir Charles Hardy, on their return from America with 4 fhips of the line and one frigate, fell in with five ¥rench line of battle fhips, and a frigate,and engaged them, and were lying by in the night, in order (0 renew the fizht the pext morning. This happened off the Lizard ; and as the French fhips were clean, being juft come out of Breft, Ad. Bofcawen difpatched the above frigate to Plymouth, defiring an immedi- ate reinforcement, and that fome thips migkht flip out the fame time, and fteer for Breft, to intercept the French fquadron, in cafe they fhould make for that port, after the engagement was over. Now. 7. Saturday Admiral Bafcawen arrived at his houfe in the Admiralty from Portfmouth, and yeiterday waited on his Majefty at Kenfington, and was moft gracioufly received. Saumarez brought her into Kingroad laft night, where both fhips are fafely anchored. The Antelope faluted her with three guns, on which fhe firuck her colours. She is called the Belliqueox, and was bound from Quebeck to France ; and has on board 470 men, 5o or 6o of whom are fick ; fhe was fhort of provifions. This dey it is expelled the prifoners will be fent to Knowle. The captain of the Antelope believes his prize to be rich, having al - ready difcovered a greaf many bales of furs. It is jmanined that this is the fame veflel that took the Maiguis of Carnarvon Indiaman, and Winchelfea man of war ; and that fhe has a quantity of gold duft and other valuable effefls, taken from on board the latter. She had the Indiamen in tow ; but be- ing chafed by Admiral Bofcawen’s fquadron, {lipt Rer prize, and was forced into the Channel.” Now. 7. By aletter from Ballycafile, dated the 261h ult. there is an account, that on the Wedaelcay befare, in the evening, a large three maft vellel took fire in the Scund of Bochlin, and burnt till fhe funk. Itis fuppofed the crew perihed. By fome letters that came on fhore it is believed the came from A- merica. The Britannia, from New York, is arrived at Briftol. She fpoke with the America, and another man of war, time not mentioned, who had taken three French fhips from Martinico. The Diligence, Galetly, from Rhode Ifland for London, is taken by a French Privateer. The z4th ult. was fent into Cork by the Sarah Letter of Marque, of Liverpool, a large Dutch fhip, homeward bound from £t. Euflatia, laden with cof- fece, cotton, &c. all French produce. O&. 9. Nine Lieutenants in the Navy are ap- pointed Captains, This week fcveral parties of bombardiers, matrof- fes, &c. have marched from Woolwich for Portl- mouth. On the 24th paft, Capt. Gilchrift, of his Majefty’s fhip Southampton, faw a fail to windward at two in the morning, to which he gave chace, and came up with her at noon, when alter an obftinate engage- ment till three in the afternocn, fhe ftruck, and pro- ved to be the Caumertin privateer from Dunkirk, commanded by Jean Baptift De Ceock, new from the ftocks, mounted 16 fix pounders, fluck fall of fwivels and mufquctoons, 280 tons, and had on board 147 men. Thurfday night and yefterday morning there was a fmart prefs on the river below bridge, and along both fhores, when a gieat maay fecamen were imprefled from the homeward bound fhips, &c. for his Majefly’s fervice. By Letters from Portfmouth we hear, that the Royal Ann, the Torbay, and another Man of War, with feveral more Ships, were drove on Shore there by the late High Winds, and its fear’d have receiv’d confiderable Damage. From St. John’s in Antigua, we have advice, That the Mafter of the Datch Brig, taken by the Woolwich and brought in there, in her Paffage from St. Domingo to St. Euftatia, declares, That the Pai- mier a fine Freach 74 Gun Ship with 1100 Men on board, and a Frigate of 40 Guns, had been engaged in fight of Cape Francois with the Dreadnought of 60 Guns and the Affiftance of 50 ; and that the Pai- mier was taken, but the Frigate efcaped. Laft Saturday Night Capt. John Malcom arrived here in 10 Days from Louifbourg, who informs ns, That the Day he came out he met his Majefly’s fhip Arundel commanded by Capt. Martin, who de- fired of him a Pilot that was acquainted with the Harbour of Louifbourg, which he put on board : Capt. Martin informa’d him he had a large Quantity of Money on board for the Garrifon, and a Packet : In Capt. Malcom came Paffengers Capt. Rogers of the Rangers, Capt. Bennet of the Brig Sally belong- ing to Philadelphia, lately caft away there. Capt. Malcom alfo informs, That he faw a large Ship to the Eaftward of the Arundel, which he fuppos’d te be cne of the Fleet that came out with her. Capt. Bartlet informs, That three Days after he left Briftol, off Ufhant, he fell in with about 145 Sail of Englith Men of War and Tranfports, ftand- ing to the Southward. °*Tis fuppos'd to be the Fleet bound to Martineco, as mentioned in our laft by Capt. Mc Taggart, Capt, Hinman who arrived at New London, laft Friday Sen’night in eighteen Days from St.Martins, informs, That three Englith Men of War had arri- ved at Barbadoes from, England, being Part of a Fleet of eight or ten Sail of the Line, wiith fome Frigates and a Number of Tranfports, who were to proceed againft Maitineco, when the whole Ficet had arrived, which was foon expe&ted, as they were left by the above Men of War a few Days before.
