Bartlett in a Brig, arrived at Bsflon in-about nine VVecks from Briflol 5 by avhom ave bawe the followiry important Articles from the Gentleman’s Magazine for the Manth of Oéiober, and two Londin Prints of the 30th of Oftober and " 9th of Nowember, the former of awhich contains an Account of the Defeat of toe King of Pruffia’s Army (or rather Part of it ) by Count Daun, wbich is as Jollows, wiz. -—114.11' King of Pruffia, on whom the eycs of all Europe are fixed, after the moft altonithing vigilance that ever a gene- ral difplayed ; and after fuch difpofi- tions as feemed to enfure fuccefs, has’ 2t lengih fuffered an irreparable lof:, by the death of two generals, whofe equals perhaps the world cacrot produce. The account which the London Gezaite has given of this fatal event is very favour- able ; but the confequences are much to be dreaded. “The lofs of common men is eafily fupplied ; but the lofs of two fuch generals wculd have made a vi@ory dear. That part of M. Mitchels difpatchies on this occafion.which the court has tho't fit to pub- iifh, is to this t 3 ¢ That on'the 14th, at four in the moraing, the right wing of the Pruffian army, encamped at Heb Kirch, was unexpefledly attack- ed by the Acferians, and pat into fome confufion, but that the brave refiltance made by the regiments of the Margrave Charles and the prince of Pruflia oave time ta the refl of the troops to get under arms; and that the King of Pruflia coming in perfon to that pait of the army, the enemy was repulled. His Prufian Majefly afterwards tho't proper to remove his camp from Hob Kirch, and retire with his righe wing towards Budiffin. Marfhal Keith and prince Francis of Branfwic were unfortunately killed in the confufion at the be- ginning of the allion. Prince Mzurice of Deflau & Major Gen. Geift are flightly wounded. During the whole time, his Proflian Majefly expofed him- felf (o the greatelt dangers, . Chus far the Gazette, ‘This account, tho” manifeltly imperfed, is yet fuf- ficient to fhew,. that the right wing of the Pruflian army was furprized in the night : and there is great reafon to fear,\bat a maflacre enfucd among a num- \ber of fleeping mea, before they couid be aceoutred for their own defence, and even to dread the confe- quences of the Confufion they were in, when they were roufed and accoutred, before they could be drawn up in order of batile, even fuppofing the al- failants to have only as one to ten. The army of the ailies under Gen. Oberg, and jntended for the defence of Hanover, has been no Jefs unfortunate than that of Pruflia. An attempt “=apon Caflel, in which were all the flores and provi- . v * ' L ol fions, and military cheft of the French army under the command of prince Soubife, failed, and the con- fequence of this mifcarriage, wili, no doubt, be at- “tended with bad effells. An autbhentic Relation by the King of Pruffia, of the Battle on the 14th of Qlober. N.the Night between the 13th and 14th Marfhal Daun attacked our Right, and as, befides the Ob- fcurity of the Night, which was extremely dark, there wqs a very thick Fog, the Pandours having giflodeed cur Battalions franc, which were at the «Zxtremity of our Flank, {lipped by into the Village Gnd fet it on Fire, which obliged the Battalions that covered the fiaule of the Village to abandon it, and retire to fome diftance ; the Aufirians made feveral Attempts to get by the Village, bat were repu'{ed as well by. our Infantry as our Cavalry : - At the fame Tiine Gen. Retzow, was attacked by the Pr. of Durlach, but after having repulfed the Enemy and taken 300 Prifoners, he came to join the Army of which the Left was attacked at the fame Time that it had received Orders to reinforce the right. In confequence of thele Orders the Battalion de Se- lei was detached and had nearly effeéted its Pur- pofe, but being too far advanced to repulfe the Ene- .-aryr, could not rejoin the Army, and was obliged to tktow down tlvreir Arms. The Poft on the Right had been foftained four Hours and a half, and it wasTen o’Ciock in the Morning when our Army received Orders to retite. Gezn. Retzow joined it,and it now occupies the Peit of Biertitz and Dobrelchutz. We have leftMarfhal Keith and Prince Francis of Brunf- wick who can rever be {ufficiently regretted. Prince Maurice of Anhalt is wounded, and as he was going Comai@;ng the Frejbe/l Advices to Bautzen in 2 Coach was made Prifoner. Gen. de Geift is wounded in the Arm, and Crockrow of the Curiaffiers in the Shoulder, The King, the Margrave and all the Generals prefent in the Allion, received Contufions, or had Horles fhot under them. We cannot exaflly elti- mate our lofs, but are fure it docs not exceed g000. The darknefs of the Night prevented the Regiment on the Right from firiking their Tents, which greatly incommoded them, and in Confequence of which they fell into the Enemy’s Hands ; thefe, however, are Misfortunes which in the Chances of War are fometimes inevitable. We have ebout 500 of the Eremy Priloners, among whom is the General Mar- quis de Vittelefchi. We hope {oon to give the Pub- lic betterNews.—To this Relation it may be added, that fince the writing of it our Lofs is much dimi- nifhed hy the Return of a great Number of Soldiers, who were fcattered in the Confufion. The lofs of the Enemy is kaown to be far more confiderable than ours.— The Ruflian Army is decamped from Stargard, and is marching with great Precipitation by Reetz and Kalies, two T'owns in the New Marche, on the Frontiers of Poland. Marfhal Keith was fhot dead the firft Dilcharge of the Enemy’s Mufquetry. He received the Bullet in his Breaft, dropt down, and never-fpcke a Word afterward. Prince Francis of Brunfwick received his Death by a Cannon Ball, which carried off his Head juft as he was mounting his Horfe. Now. 7. The Bruffels accourt of the late altion fays, All was over by ten,and the Marfhal fent M.de Laudon, with three regiments of dragoons, viz, thofe of Loewenftein, Deux-Ponts, and Darmftadt, to purfue the encmy. We took the whole camp of the Pruflians and all their baggsge. The regiments of their right wing bad fcarce time to take up their erms. The num- ber of cannon we took at the beginning of the affair, during the a&tion, and in the purfuit, amouats to 101, among which are eight 24 and thirty-feven 12 poun- ders. A great quantity of ammunition and warlike implements have alfo fallen into our hands, and more are {till bringing in, as well as artillery. We have taken upwards of 28 celours and two flandards from the enemy. Thefe undoubted proofs of viQtory were prefented on the 18th to their Imperial and Royal Majefties by M. de Tillier. We may compute the lofs of the enemy already, in killed, wounded, and deferters, at 10,000 at leaft. We cannot juftly tell what our lofs is ; but it would not have been fo confiderable if the enemy had not had fuch a vaft number of artillery ; we are at pre- fent making out an exadt lit of the lofs on both fides, and fhall foon give it to the pablick. On Sunday Major Prideanx, of the 3d Regiment of Foot Guards kifs’d his Majeity’s Hand at Kenfington on his being appointed Col. of Lord Howe’s Regiment of Foot in America. His Majefty’s fhip Winchelfea of 24 Guns, who fell in with a French Man of War of 64 Guns, and & Frigate of 36 Guns from Quebec, Weft of the Cape, engaged the Frigate for a long Time ; but unfortunately lofing her Mafts, was obliged to ftrike to the Man of War, who bore down with her lower Tier run out, The French fhips were weakly mann’d, the 64 Gun fhip not having above 40 Men able to work her, which obliged them to land moft of the Englith failors. The Fair American is arrived at Plymouth, from Louifbourg, laft from Rochelle, with 31 Englifa prifoners. On thurfday fev'night fhe fell in with five French Men of War, who had a large prize in tow, fuppofed to be an Ealt Indiaman; and they had that morning taken the Hercules privateer of London. The laft Advices from the King of Pruffia’s Army fay, that they cansot jultly determine the lofs ; but there was reafon to think it very confiderable on both fides ; that it was cafly to infer from the confe- quences of this a&ion, that it was far from being de-. cifive, ina/much as the Pruffians when they fell back to Bautzsh, were not in the lealt difturbed in their retreat, and are ready for a fecond altion. The King of Pruffia was in the hotteft of the bat. tle, and had a hosfe fhot under him ; none of the ar- my fuffer’d fo much as the Gen'sde arms, moft of whole offcers were flain upon the fpot. In the e- vening the King erdered one of his gereral officers to be put under arreft for mifconde® in the adlion. On the 14th Inft. between 3 and 4 in the morn- ing, a {mart fhock eof an Earthquake was felt at Maeftricht. 0. 31. Perhaps when 21l Circum{lances are confidered, the Kir, of Pruflia will appear greater in his late Defeat, than in any Vi€tory he ever yet ob- tained. TheWing of his Army that was {urprized on a Diftance from him, the twoGenerals that com- manded it flain on the firlt Onfet, his other principal Generals wounded, the whole Wing in Confufion without a Leader ; to come, in thefe defperate Cir- cumflances in hafte from another Quarter, to recover all ; twice to repulfe the Fnemy, and at laftover- born only by Numbers and Fatigues without being’ purfued, is {fuch an Inftance of Great Generalfhip, that, perhaps, no Man ever heard of before.
