Martinico ds extremely ftreng and populous. Guardaloupe andGrand Terre, which are {eparated only by a rivulet, and therefore are always confidered as v Hlaad, would be no difficult conqueit. Guardaioupe lies in fight of An. tigua, and makes about forty thoufard hogtheads of fugar a year, befides ram, cottan and ginger. Bafs Terre is the capital, which is fituated in a bay whick forms a pretty good harbour, and is ind:fferently for- tified : the extent of the two iflands is about thirty- five miles, and, in molt places, fixteen miles broad ; round which are feveral good bays, of which Port Lewis in Grand Terre is the belt, and always fmooth water, where a defcent couid bz made with the greatelt eale, as there is not a fingie pieee of cannon to oppofe it. There are not above three thouland Frenchmen in the two iflands : indeed they might arm fome negroes, but they would all probably de- fert, as they are almoft ftarving ; and, befide the force we thall fend from heace, above two thoufand volunteers might be raifed in Astigua, St Kit’s, Nevis, Mentlerrat, and Virgin iflands. Almolt all the three decked fhips are going to Plymsath to join Admiral Saanders. We hear that the French Army, on their retreat to Caflel, obliged the inhabitants to put out jliumi- nations for the vi€ory gained over the Englith, on the French coaft, on pain of military execation, ‘The Lizard man of war isarrived at Plymouth, and has bro’t in a French frigate, late the Hanover- Packet, from Bourdeaux for Brefl, O&. 9 'The Therefa irigate of and for Havre de Grace from Martinico, is taken by the Achilles man of war, and brought into Piymouth. A moft thocking murder was commited at Hambleton ou the hill, a viliage near Uakbam in Rut'andfhire, vpou the bodies of Anne Woods and Robert Broome, .two poor aged cottagers, John Swanfon of that weighbourhcod. Woods had employed Broome to trim a h himfelf, weat tothe hedge witha hat arm 3 bue beforg kit had gt threr partsef the he met the oldwoman teturaing homs from the man ; and without ary previous faiutation, knogked her down with his hatcher, He then went to the place where the poor man was at work, kesocked him down in the bike manner, chopt of° hLis head wiih his hatchet; opencd his body and plucked out his heart, which he wrapt up with the head, in a piece of old rag. He then returned to the dead corple of the woman, cut down her flays before, cpened her body, and puliing cut ber hcart, bound wvp both the hearts and head together, which he carried home, and hid in a chelt under his own bed. The officers of the parifh, recziving information that Broome wag murdered, immediately turned their {ufpicions upon Swanfen, and went the fame night to Swanfon’s houfe, and being admiited, charged him with the murder, who, after flanding dumb about three minutes, con- fefled the whoie ; and that Robert Broome’s head, and both hearts lay concealed under his bed. He was fecured immediately and committed to Oakham goal. It appears by all the circumllances of this murder that the man was mad, and deferved to have been cocfined long before. Admiralty-Office, O&. 10, Capt. Douglafs of his majefty’s fhip Alcide, gives an account in his ietter of the 8th inft. that having reccived intelligence of a French frigate called tie Felicite of 36 guns, aad a flate called the Robufle, of 24, being failed from Bourdeaux the 1oth of September; he, with his majefty’s thip AQleon, ftecred a courfe to intercept them ; and on the 15th, 20 leaguss to the weltward of cape Finiftere, they came up with and took the Robuite, theFelicite having left her the night before.
