An office is a going to be ereted for-the Marines, 5000 being intended always to be kept on the efta- blifirment. Eighteen fhips of war, from 80 to 24 guns each, have been lately put on the ftocks in his Majefty’s dock-yards, and in feveral private yards, which are promifed to be ¢ompleated within 2 years at farthef. The King of Pruflia has now an army of upwards of tawo bundred thoufand fine troops ; for in all the towns and villages where his officers went to recruit, it was with great difficulty that any of the young men were prevailed on to ftay.at home to take care of their families. Extral? of a Letter from a Merchant in Leghorn, dated February 1o. * We are juft now informed by a Veflel arrived from Gibraliar, that the Defiance Privateer, Capt. ‘Dyer, and Antelope, Capt. Riddle, had fent in there @ French Cruizer of 36 Guns.’ They write from Lyons, that Cardinal Tencin, Archbifhop of that City, &c. died there a few Days ago, in the 78th Year of his Age. ‘He was madea “Cardinal by Clement X11. in 1739. Extrat of a Letter from Portfmouth, April 2. ¢ Yefterday Morning arrived trom the Downs, the Jafon, Aldborough, Firedrake, Merlin, Fly and Sal- tath, with 180 Sail under Convoy. ¢ The fame Morning failed Admiral Broderick in the St. George, the Glafgow and Alderny, and the T'rade for Portugal and the Streights ; tuc Chefter- field with the Trade for New York and Virginia; the Infernal Bomb with the Trade for Guernfey. ¢ This Morning the five Companies of Brudenell’s Regiment march’d off our Parade, and were put on’ board the Tranfports. It is faid they are deftined for Halifax under Convoy of the Vanguard. The reft of the Regiment embark’d at Gofport. Same Evening the Firedrake and Zephyr fail’d on a Cruize.’ Paris, March 4. Our politicians begin to be. fomewhat uneafy about the deftination of the great fleet going from England. This day arrived the Anandale tranfport, Captain Johnfon, with about 70 highlanders aboard ; fhe fail- ed from Cork, with a fleet of tranfports bound to New York, under convoy of his Majefty’s Ship the Hampfhire, bat {prung a leak afew days afterwards, and after putting into Lifbon to refit, fprung the leak a-new and loft her mizen maft, before fhe could reach the coaft of North- America, and was obliged to bear away for this ifland, where fhe arrived in the utmoft diftrefs ; the men being almoft worn out with fatigue, and hardly able to keep the Veflel a- float ; to compleat her misfortunes the was 3 times attacked to windward by French Privateers which were beat off with fmall arms. WILLIAMSBURG, May g, By an Exprefs arrived in Town Yefterday from’ Augafta, we learn that the Enemy Indians are very numerous on the Frontiers, that they have lately ta- ken and burnt twc of our Forts, where were ftatio- ned one of our ranging Companies, 40 of whom were killed and fcalped, and Licutenant Dunlop with 19 Men mifling. F PHILADELPHIA, May 18. We hear from Fort Littleton, that a Party of 12 Cherokee Indians, who had been on a Scout, are come in there and have brought with them 4 Scalps. They fell in with a large Party of Enemy Indians, and killed and fcalped eight of them, but were fo clofely purfued that they loft four of the Scalpsin their Way to the Fort. By a Letter from Winchefter, dated the 12th In- ftant, there is Advice thatthe Virginia Troops are compleat, and on their March to that Place. Capt. Hardie, from Barbadoes, on the Third In- ftant, fpoke with a Veflel, from Whitehaven for Virginia, the Mafter of which told him, the Day be- fore he faw a Ship and Snow, and that all of a fudden the latter went to the Bottom. Part of a Letter from Albany, dated May 12, “ Our Military Gentlemen are in great Spirits a- bout the prefent Campaign ; all Hands are. very bufy getting every Neceflary to Fort Edward, and not a Moment’s Time is loft in getting every Thing teady to proceed.” ‘Beggar, of this Port, took up at Ses, 8 Number of Frenchmen, in a Long Boat, who were Part of the Crew ofa Ship that was caft away at the Cacafes : “They had in their Boat upwards of £. 4000 in ‘Gold, which Capt. Troup took proper Care of, and Janded the Frenchmen fafe on Hfpaniola. Extraét of a Letter from Philadelphia, dated laft Thurfday at v o’Clock, P. M. ¢ Juft now arrived here the Snow True Briton, of 14 Guns, Capt. Smith, from Briftol : Laft Sun- -day, in Soundings, near our Capes, he was attacked by a French Privateer Sloop of 10 Guns, but Mon- fiear not liking Captain Smith, thought proper to theer off, after exchanging a few Shot.” Saturday laft the Privateer Snow Mary- Anne, Capt. Shoals, returned from a Cruize :— He informs es, That about a Month ago, the Mafter of a Da- qith Sloop, who had been but 2 few Days from Cape Francois, acquainted him, that two New- Vork Privateers, both Topfial Veflels, had been carried in there by a Frigate. Sunday the 14th Inftant, Captain- arrived here from Waterford : He failed from thence the 3d of April, but has brought no Prints : He acquaints us, That the Day he left Waterford, Mr. Penrofe, of that City, received a Letter from Mr. Barclay, of Dublin, wherein heinformed him, That the Admi- rals Ofborne and Saanders had taken three French Men of War and a Frigate, and fent them into Gib- raltar. Extradt of a Letter from Albany, - dated the 13th In. Jrant, being @ Relation of the Murder committed at the German-Flats, near Fort-Herchamer, by 80 Indians, ard 4 Frenchmen. 15 ¢ About 12 0’Clock, on Monday the 3oth of April laft, an Onida Indian acquainted Captain Her- chamer, that a Party of 80 Indians and four French- men, were nigh his Fort, and would certainly come down and attack the Settlements that Day, and ad- vifed Capt. Herchamer to go into the Fort, and take as many of the Inhabitants with him, as he could colle&. About 3 0’Clock, moft Part of the Inha- bitants, having Notice from Capt. Herchamer, left their Houfes, and affembled at the Fort ; four Fa- milies, that bad fled from Henderfon’s Purchafe, in the Spring for Fear of the Enemy, could not getin, and had in their Houfes, two Indian T'raders, of the Name of Clock, and fix Waggoners that were car- rying Capt. Gage’s Baggage to the Fort. At 4 o’- Clock, all of a fudden, the Houfes were attacked ; and the Waggoners being furprized, run up Stairs, the better to defend themfelves. The Indians im- mediately rufhed into the Houfe and kili’d and {calp- ed all that were below ; fome of the Indians at- tempted the Stairs, but they were knocked down by the Waggoners ; they then fired up thro’ the Loft, and foon were joined by more Indians, who fired many Shot quite thro’ the Houfe, and propofed to fet it on Fire, which intimidated John Ehel, a Waggo- ner, to fuch a Degree, that he leap’d out at a Win- dow, thinking to make his Efcape, but was foon kill- ed ; the other five defended themfelves with great Intrepidity, baving killed one Indian, until they were relieved by a Party of Rangers, who came to their Affitance, and after exchanging a few Shot, the Indians fled, feeing our People have the Advan- tage of a Log Fence.—Capt.- Herchamer fays he faw four or five of the Indians drop, but were carri- ed off. In the above Affair, 33 of the Inhabitants were killed, and Lieut. Hair, of the Rangers, recei- ved a flight Wound in the Breaft. —Next Day fome Onidas came down to trade, and met the Enemy going off, who told them they had 6 of their Com- pany killed, and g wounded.—Next Morning a Woman came into the Fort that had been fcalped, befides having her Nofe aimoft cut off, with a Wound in her Breft, and another in her Side. She is likely to recover, related all that happened till fhe was fcalped, and fays there was Onondado Indians a- mong(t them.” Extra& of a Letter from Charleflown, in South Caro- lina, dated dpril 277, 1758. Latk Nightarrived a fhip in 14 Days from Anti- ua, from whence I have a Letter acquainting me, g‘hat a very large Fleet of French and Dutch Mer- chantmen were hourly expeéted at Martinico, under a frong Convoy ; and thay Commodore Moore, with the fhips undermentioned, was getting ready to intercept them, and block up the French Harbours. The Captain was five Weeks at Antigua, in which - Time 14 French Privateers were brought in ¢ khe Cambridge, Amazon, Antigua, Tyger, and Col. Prevoft. - : Ships, . Guns, Commanders. Befides the Antilope of 50, and the Tryal of 1% Guns are hourly expeéted from Cork, to join thetn, Extra& of another Letter from Charlefivavn, in South- Carolina, dated April 28, 1758. ¢¢ Laft Night arrived a thip from Briftol, by which I have Letters dated the 6th of March ; in” one of them, (from an eminent Merchant, who is fole Ownet of feveral Privateers) is- the following remarkable Paragraph : ¢ It may be of Ufe to you o know, “* that the Admiralty Courts of London and Dublin, ““ condemn all thips and Cargoes in general, that “ come diretly from the French Plantations in the « Eaft or Weft Indies, or America, agreeable to a ¢« Refolution which has been fignified to the States * General.” : B OSTON, - Ma 2. On Friday the 5th Inftant, about Four o’Clock in the Afternoon, a Dwelling Houfe belonging to the Widow Sarah Hooper in Bridgwater, improved by Mr. Hezekiah Hooper, when the Family were at a Neighbour's, was burnt to the Grouhd, and the Hou- thold Farniture and other Things therein almoft alf deftroyed : It is fuppofed to be occafioned by the Crofs Bar of the Chimney’s taking Fire and burning thro’ to the woaden Work. g The fame Day, and about the fame Hour, the Houle of Mr. John Leech, at Halifax, in Plymouth County, the People alfo being from Home,was burat to the Ground, and the Houthold Goods, aind every Thing therein, confumed. And on the gth Inftant the Houfe of Mr. Knot, at Saybrook, in Conneéticut, took Fire in the Night and was confumed with every Thing it it, except one Bed, and the People who narrowly efcap’d pe- rithing in the Flames. ' The Rev. Mr. Holmes, lately ordain'é there, boarded in the Houfe, and awaking -when the Room was on Fire, jump’d up and threw his Bed out of the Window, and thea falling upon it fav’d his Life. The Skipper of a Fifherman who arriv'd at Mar- blehead latt Thurfday reports, that on the 15th and 16th Current, he heard a conftant Firing ; he being then a fmall Diftance from the Ifle of Sables— Whicls makes it probable fome Freneh Veflels have fell in with our Cruizers off Louifbourg. : k By an Exprefs which returned on Wednefday laft from Albany, we have an Account, That on the 4th Inftant, Major Rogers being out with a Scouting Party of 17 Men, took 3 Prifoners and one Scalp within 3 Miles N. E. of Crown-Point-Fort, as they were at Work in the Garden. The fame Day Capt. Starks, with another Scouting-Party of the fame Number, took two Prifoners nearTliconderago ; and the 6th of May, on his Return to Fort-Edward, near Lake George, he met with 4 Frenchmen, one of them a Lieutenant taken at the Siege of Fort Wil- liam Henry, the other two belong’d to a Veflel fent . into New-York laft Summer, who had efcaped from Long Ifland, and were endeavouring to get to ®rown-Point, which he brought back to Fort Ed- ward. Two Days after, viz. the 8th of May, Capt. Jacobs, of the Stockbridge Indians, with 21 Men, being out ona Scout, took ten Prifoners and 7 Scalps, about a Mile Eaft from Ticonderago, as they were coming over to Work. We hear alfo, that fome of the above Prifoners inform, that above 30 of the Englith which the French and Indians took in the Skirmifh they had with Major Rogers fome Time ago, were killed and cut to Pieces after they had capitulated, the Indians being enraged at finding a Number of Scalps in an Officer’s Packet which they took.—The Prifoners gave very different Accounts of the Lofs the French and Indians fuftain- ed in that Affair.—— Lieut. Stephens with a Flag of Truce was gone from Fort Edward to Ticonderago.— That on laft Saturday Night fen’night, an Inhabi- tant of Albany pafling by one of the Guards, and not giving a proper Anfwer, being in Liquor, was fired upon by the Centinel, and killed on the Spot. Capt. Dingley, who arrived here laft Friday in g Days from Halifax, informs, That Seven of Admiral Bofcawen’s Squadron, with fix Tranfports, fail’d from thence laft Saturday was fen’night : The Re- mainder of the Fleet with the Tranfports, were to {ail the next Day.
