Jordan, Efq; our Conful at the Groyne, dated March 8, 1758 ; the Subfiftance of which. is as follows : ¢¢ By Letters from Carthagena, Ifind Admiral Of- borne has fallen in with three French Men of War of the Line, and two Frigates ; Part of the Engage. ment between thefe two %afi and two of the Englith Frigates was feen off the Port of Carthagena the 28th of Febroary, between Five and Six Afternoon. At “half paft Six they were out of Sight, falling to Lee- ward of the high Land ; but about Nine Mr. Banks gCouhcil at Carthagena) {ays, the Firing ceafed ; and he adds, that he was informed by fome Fifherman, that they faw off the Port of Carthagena 12 large Men of War with Englith Colours, but that twosof them had white Colours under the Englith ; {o that Mr. Banks makes no dosbtbut that all the five French Men of War are taken, otherwile, fays he (and very. juftly) they would have come clofe in, as they had done before_op the 26th before the hard Gale, which fucceeded on the 27th, had blowed them to- Sea, the Weather all Day Yefterday, the 28th of ?ebruary, having been very moderate. .M. de la Clue fent out his Long Boats manned and armed;bug they returned empty handed. His Squadron did fio, ftir, and ftill remains at Carthagena. ¢ The French Ships, which it is fuppofed Admi- ral Ofborne met with, were the Reinforcement un- der M. du Quefne, coming o0 join M. de la Clue ; their Names are the Foudroyant of 84 Guns ; the Orpheeus of 74 ; the Oriflamme of 6o ; the la Pley- ade of 30 ; and the Rofe of 26.” Other Letters from ‘the Groyne fay pofitively " that the above five Ships are taken by Admiral Of- borne.—A Confirmation of this News will be very acceptable. And by a Cartel Ship arrived at Dover, we hear that the French acknowledge that Admiral Ofborne had taken a Ship of 84 Guns, all Brals, and one of 24 Guns ; but that a third had made her Efcape. Thefe Ships were going to-join M. de la Clue. Letters from Toulon by the lat Mail fay, that the Pleyade Man of War of 31 Guns, one of M. du- Quefne’s Squadron, had gat back to Toulon, but could give no Account of the reft of the Fleet. Letters from France advife, that there wasa Naval engagement on.the coafts of Murcia, between an Englith and French fquadron to the advantage of the former, who took or funk three Frebch men of war. The particulars are not exally known ; but it is hoped they will be confirmed. Motft of the People here are partifans of Pruffia, who often rally fuch as favour the French; for the contemptible figure they lately made in the Ele@orate of Hanover. Advices from France in- form us, that great naval armaments -are making at Toulon and Rochefort, which are to take troops on board to fend to America, in order to defeat the pro- je&s of the Englifh.
