There is a very fingular anecdote related here. Itis faid, that at the defeat of Rofbach, a French grenadier feeing his comrades flying on all fides, but, however, not being difpofed to follow their example, placed himfelf behind a tree;and there defended himfelf like a lion, againft _feverallof the enemy’s foldiers, who endeavoured to furrourd him; that in the mean time the King of Pruflia happened to pafs by that place, and addrefling himfelf to this brave fellow, faid to him, * Grenadier, ¢ furrender ; do you thick yourfelf invincible ' To which he replied, ¢ Yes, Sire, if you were my com- mander.” His Majelly was fo pleafed with the gre- nadier’s reply, that he gave orders to leave him at libeity. 7 Hawmpurcn, Feb. 17, Ttis confidently afferted that the King of Denmark has refolved to fend an Army of 25,000 Men into Ho?in. The Bruffels Gazette aflures us, that the Emprefs Queen’s army will be more confiderable this year than it was laft campaign; the kingdom of Hungary will bring into the field, at its own charge, between 30 and 40,000 men, and furnifh them with horfes, arms, &c. Befides thefe troops, the Emprels will get 40,000 men from Croatia, 20,000 from Ser- via, and 10,000 from Bofniaand the countries along the Saave: all which are to be under the command of Field Marfhal Nadafti — But the Brufiels Gazet- teer has forgot to tell us, whether the Grand Seignor has given his Sovereign leave to raife rccroits in his territories. From Mentz they give us the following ftory. Five priefts at Weiflesaur, a town half a league di- ftant from Mentz, having obtained a licenfe to make a colletion in the country, for ranfoming Chriftians in Turkith flavery, exercifed their zeal very quietly and fuccefsfully feveral days: but as.the behaviour of thofe Miflionaries became fufpicious, they were ftriétly watched, and at length it was difcovered they were raifing men for certain potentates, and occafi- oned no {mall defertion among the troops of Mentz. His Majefty’s thips the Torbay and Chichefter, have taken and brought into Portfmouth a French privateer of 26 guns, four of them zo pounders, and the reft 14 pounders, toge- ther with an Englifh prize the had taken in her cruize, homeward bound from Philadelphia. The privateer is called the Roftan. : March 4. This Morning, at three o'Clock, arrived here, by the Way of Holland, a Courier which brings the following Actount. That after Prince Ferdinand of Brunfwick had dif- Jodged the French from Rottenburg, Otterfberg and Verden, and approached with his advanced Guard the City of Bremen, the krench had left it on the 23d of February, and his Serene Highnefs had taken Poffeflion of it with his Troops. The Prince, upon receiving Intelligence that the French - General Comte de Chabot was pofted with a confiderable Detachment at Hoya upon the Wefer, gave Orders to the hereditary Prince of Bronfwick to repair thi- ther with two Batealions of Hanoverians, and two of the Brunfwick Troops, together with a few hund- red Chaffeurs, Huffars and light Trcops, in order to diflodge the French from that Poft. The hereditary Prince accordingly made fo brave an Attack upor’ them there, that, after a vigorous Defence, and the Lofs of a Number of Men, on their Part, he forced them, with Bayonnets fixed, to furrender, and made between fourteen and fifteen hundred Men Prifoners of War. Hereupon the Comte de Chabot threw himfelf, with two other Battalions, into the Caflle, with an intent to fupport himfelf there ; and the hereditary Prince, not having been hitherto able, on Account of the Overflowings of the Rivers, and the Badnefs of the Roads, to receive the Artillery re- quired for forcing the French General there likewife, granted him a Capitulationto go out of the Place with his two Battalions, but upon Condition of lea- ving behind him all their Baggage and Magazines. The Lofs on our Side is inconfiderable, and does r.ot ®nount, uponthe whole, both of the killed and wounded, to an hundred Men, - The Proffian Hoflars of the advanced Guard, ha- ving received Information, that a great Number of FrenchHuffars of Poleretfky’s Regiment was atNord Drebber, determined to drive them from thence ; which refolution they executed fo fuccefsfully, that after the Slaughter of three Officers and fifty Huffars they made the Colonel Proleretfky, (who is dan- geroufly wounded) with two Caprains, two Lieute- nants, and an hundred and thirty Huffars, Prifoners of War, and took befides ten Standards, a pair of ket- tle drums, and three hundred Horfes. The two Generals, the Marquis D’Armentieres, and the Marquis de Raochepine, together with the Garrifon, evacuated the Town of Zell on the 26th of February ; as the Prince de Clermont, and the Duke de Randan, did Hanover on the 28th, obfer- ving good Difcipline, and without the leaft Plunder. We hear likewife, that the French have quitted Brunfwick, Caffel, Gottingen, Hamelen, Neinburg, - &c. the particulars whereof are till expefted. Their Plan at prefent,feems to be to retire towards Mun- fter, Paderborn, and Ofnabrug : But as Prince Fer- dinand follows them clofely with all imaginable Ex- pedition, he will probably furprize fome of their Detachments on their March, before they arrive at the Place of their Deftination.
