CAMPOLD MAY BE COMING GHAMPION Shows Signs of Greatness in De- Teating Tom Heeney New York, Aug. 16 (P—Take it from Tom Heeney, the “Honest Blacksmith” from New Zealand— the next heavyweight champion will be Victorio Campolo of the Argen- tine. “Honest Tom” expressed his opin- | ion of Campolo’s worth last night after the six foot seven inch South American had stopped him in the ninth round of as bruising and sav- age a struggle as Metropolitan fans have witnessed since the palmy days of Jack Dempsey. “The greatest fighter I ever faced,” | was Heeney’s comment. “No one ever hit me as hard as that giant did with those right hands. I think he'll be the next heavyweight champion.” For seven rounds the New Zea- lander and his giant opponent bat- tled on even terms, the tide of ap- parent victory swinging quickly from | one to the other. In the eighth, | however, Heeney, weakened by Campolo’s heavy body punches, was a mark for the Argentine's right hand. One crushing right sent him to the floor for no count just before the round ended. In the ninth Campolo battered the New Zealander from | pillar to post and finally floored him with a terrific right. Gamely Heeney g0t up at seven but he was out on his feet and the referee stepped in between the fighters and led Tom to his corner, victim of a technical knockout. Campolo, who faile& to impress, the experts in his first fight Wwith Arthur Dekuh, from whom he won on a foul, gave every sign of future | greatness last night. He boxed well, | was extremely fast on his feet for so big a man and carried plenty of dy- | namite in his right hand and dis- | played at the same time a long left | that kept Heeney away most of the time. The Argentine topk full ad- vantage of his superior weight and reach and fought a heady battle. He weighed 223 to Heeney's 204%.
