Ahlgren of this city | swept aside precedent and on he chestnut tresses was placed th crown which symbol the highest compliment which the student body pays annually to one of its numnber. In the several years during whicl the Normal school girls have pre- | sented their annual May Day exer- cises there never was one which equalled that presented on the souta | campus of the school yesterday. ac- | cording to members of the school | faculty and graduates which were in | attendance. Seating accommodntionsi prepared in advance were practical- ly doubled and many present stood during the exercises. The entire program was held un- | der the direction of Miss Katherine | Colton, assisted by Miss Rachel | Spencer. The success of the event | reflects credit upon these two facul- | ty members who worked several | weeks in preparing the students for | the drills and dances. | Heralds Lead Procession | At exactly 4 o'clock, i when the event was scheduled to| start, the entire cnroliment of the | school marched in solemn procession | preceded by velvet-clad heralds. The | last part of the group formed a | guard of honor through which the | May queen and her assistants pass- | ed. | Miss Alhgren who was chosen Queen of the May on a vote of her| classmates, finally made her appear- | ance. | The May Queen presented an at- tractive picture, dressed in white With her were her maid of honor, Miss Hulda Bengston of New Britain and here three attendants, Miss | Anna-Mae Havlick of this city and | Misses Sybil Lake and Catherine Thompson of Hartford. | Program for Queen’s Delight Miss Bengston placed a wreath of May flowers on her head. Immedi- | ately her subjects began the after- noon's entertainment which was held for her enjoyment. The feature of the entertainment was gymnastic exercises by Robin lood and his band. Several pyra- | mids were formed and crumbled fn graceful fashion by the agile for- | csters. The only individual effort of the afternoon was that given by the “court jester. P. Marsh of this city, a director of the state Chamber, representing the Connect- icut Motor Truck Assn. The plan has the approval of the !New Britain Chamber having been voted unanimously by the directors {last January. The righway department has been unable to construct the underpass so that it will be properly drained during a heavy storm, with the result that water becomes so deep there traftic is tied up. A short detour over a rough road avoids this underpass. The proposal is to have the detour repaired. BRIDGEPORT FIRE " DESTROYS 2 SHOPS Damage Is $10,000—Several Firemen Receive Injuries Bridgeport, May 23 (P—Losses in the fire which last night de- stroyed the former plant af the Co- lumbia Nut and Bolt company and gutted the Hathaway Mfg. Co. plant at Railroad and Boswick avenues will aggregate more than $10,000, it was indicated today when fire insurance adjusters had {an opportunity to survey the dam- | age. l The economic Iqes will be con- siderable, for the fire threw about 160 employes of the Hathaway com- pany out of work, and has halted production in that concern until power lines can be restored, ma- chines repaired and the machine shop rebuilt.
