CNSUNPTION ORE " FRATD DNCOVERD * Nore Then 10,00 Persons Be- ‘Toved Victimizad by Swindlers Les Angeles, Cal, May 23 UP— ‘What federal authorities called one of the largest “tuberculosis cure’ swindles ever perpetrated in the west was brought to light here yesterday with the indictment of five persons cn charges of using the mails to Jde- fraud. Charles F. Aycock and Glen 8. Jerdan, named in indictments, were arrested and pond fixed at $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. Telegraphic warrants for the arrest of Adolph Beyer, George 7. Lester, and Mar- tin H. Lester were sent to the Unit- €d States marshal at Denver, Colo. Post office inspectors said the “guaranteed cure” preparations cx- ploited by the defendants had vic- timized ‘zore than 10,000 persons to the extent of about $1,008,000 over a period of several yea Government chemists and medical experts were unanimous in the state- ment *that the preparations sold by the alltged combine were worthless in treating tuberculosis. Government agents said the first of the so-called medical institutes was operated in 1910 by Aycock. A charge ot fraud issued in December, 1927, prohibited delivery of mail to either himself or the Aycock Medical institute and its allied organizations. The -second fraud order was is- sued last March with the discovery that Aycock had turned the manage- ment over to Jotdan. From him the Lester brothers were said to have obtained a contract to operate a Denver office. GEN, GHIANG GALLS ON MOHAMMEDANS Hopes to Ealist Old Enemies of “Christian General” Shanghal, May 23 (M—Enlisting of considerable Mohammedan d _Appeared today as a major strategic move by General Chiang Kai-Ehek, so-called president of Nationalist China, to preserve the Nanking regime against the attack of the central China war lord, General Feng Yu-Hsiang. ‘Western-China has & large and pawerful Mehasmmedan population whose armies in the past have in- flicted severe defeats upon troops of Feng when he has attempted their subjugation. They would prove a .most powerful ally te Chiang and conceivably might turn the halance of power in his direction. i Hankow dispatches today said two \Mohammedan leaders had arrived ifrom Chinese Turkestan by way of Bzechwan province. They were en ireute to Nanking to confer with Chiang. It was understood the Na- tionalist government was deferring ‘its campaign against Feng until it had assured itself of Mohammedan support in cutting off the retreat of Feng's !mu‘ the west. Meanwhile ¥tionalist forces were takifg up their positions along the Han Kiang and the Peking-Hankow railway. Both Nanking and Hankow were subjected to the most rigid ‘press censorship and only dispatches containing bare essentijals of the sit- uation could be pushed through. In repuise of Kwangsi armies which were engiged in an offensive against Canton for the control of Kwangtung the government of Gen- eral Chiang Kai 8hek has won an- other victory, although the aid from Nanking to Canton hardly material- ized in the form expected. The vic- tory, it is thought, should be much to permit Nanking to give its undi- vided attention to General Teng, who in a public statement vesterday said: “The extermination of Chiang Kai-8hek is at hand.” Troops Are Diverted Hong Kong. Canton, which had lived for years in fear of capture and pillage, spent a wild and jubilant night in cele- bration of the victory, which was said here to have been due to the faillure of the Kwangsi generals to maintain their supplies and ammu- nition. The Kwangsi attack, highly suc- cesaful at first, thus failed when Canton seemed just within grasp. STATE CHALLENGES |7 16TH ANENDNENT llinoir House Yotes to Find What Rights Are Involved Springfield, T, May 23 (®—The Illinois house of representatives has challenged the powers of congress to control medicinal and industrial alcohol and non-intoxicating bever- ages by passage of a bill directing the attorney general to bring suit in the United States supreme court to decide what state rights had been granted congress with ratification of the 18th amendment. The vote, tak- en last night, was 59 to 52. The supreme court decided re- cently in a suit brought by an in- dividual that the state specifical granted control of alcoholic bever- ages to congress and implied the granting of control of other alcohols |j and beverages. Representative Le Roy Green, of Rockford, I, spon- sor of the house bill, declared he believed a suit brought by a state would have more weight with the supreme court than one instituted by an individual. In urging passage of the biil, Green referred to the national situ- ation just before the Dred Sgot de-| cision and declared: “If you continue to drive the lib- erals as you have in the past five years, you'll find the nation where it was then—in a controversy which can only be wiped out with blood.” Green also assailed United Statos Congressman William Holladay, of Danville, Ill., for his recent defense in congress of a police officer who had killed a youth riding with a bootlegger. Green's bill now goes to the sen- ate. An identical measure intro- duced in the senate simultaneously with introduction of the Green bill In the house, was referred to cora- mittee and has not been reported.
