‘Second Section L. 1. POV WOW " INWIGHAW HERE Central Connecticut Red Men's +Assn. Has Enjopable Program Over 100 Red Men gathered at the wigwam of Mattabesett Tribe It evening to attend the session of the Central Connecticut Red Men's asso- eiation. After a short business session, the entertainment began with an acro- JOSEPH F. DUTTON. batic act by Scott Brothers. Cay ana 8id, a comedy duo, sang and played and entertained with a number of stories and jokes. The final feature was a talk by ex-Mayor Joseph F. Dutton of Bris- tol who is Past S8achem of Com- pounce Tribe, After talking briefly on the origin, history and patriotic features of the order, he took the members on an imaginary tour of the Far East, touching here and there in the varlous countries and ¢iting strange incidents. After the meeting refreshments were served and old acquaintances renewed about the tables. Bacon's orchestra furnished music through- out the evening. There will be no meeting on Oe- eember 24 but on New Year's Eve, the tribe will elect chiefs and hold a bunco party. The Christmas party for children will be held on Janu- ary 7. HOOVER OFF FOR RI0 DE JANEIRO (Continued from First Page) Americas. He gave earnest expres- sion of these impressions in an ex- change of speeches with President Campnsteguy at a farewell banquet which was attended by a distin- gulshed company of Uruguayans and Americans. Size Doesn’t Count Mr. Hoover sald Uruguay demon- strated that the moral weight of na- tions is not based upon size or num- bers, but upon the spirit and char. acter of a people. Uruguay is thus an example of the profound politi- + cal truth that national greatness springs from the heights and depths of the national soul. “I have hoped,” Mr. Hoover sald, *that I might by this visit symbolize the courtesy call from one good neighbor to another that might con- vey respect and esteem and a desire for intellectual and spiritual cooper- ation.” Economic exchanges, he sald, were of the utmost importance for the preservation and betterment of life, but the exchanges of ideas were even more vitally important to hu- manity. From the exchange of ideas, systems of thought and life from which freedom springs were reen- forced and strengthened. Addressing the Uruguayan presi- dent, Mr. Hoover concluded: “Your acts and words spring, I feel, not only from exquisite court. esy but from the generous heart of a free people. I appreciate them on my account, and accept them with gratitude on behalf of my republic, which has been proud to call Uru- guay her sister and consistent friend.” Leading Americans of Central and South America who have been fol- lowing the progress of the Hoover tour, believe its result will be in- calculable in promoting friendship. Some of those in various countries visited who came in closet contact with Mr. Hoover in his dealings with the various officials, sald he showed an unusual facllity in grasping each | local situation. This was regarded | | as especlally true in reference to re- | lations between North and South America. Mr, Hoover's abllity to| | present the various viewpoints which apparently served to remove misunderstanding also was praised. To Decide Later After leaving Rio Janelro on Christmas eve, Mr. Hoover will de- cide his future itinerary. Appar- ently he has decided to eliminate some West Indian stops which were originally planned and possibly Ha- vana will be excluded {rom the re- turn voyage. Mr. Hoover was be- lieved to be anxious to get to Flor. ida for conference with party lead- ers on the makeup of his cabinet. He also was thought to be anxious to make plans for his own admini- stration, including the tasks to be set for the special session of the new congress which is to be called primarily for the solution of the farm relief problem. WALSKA'S APPEAL 1§ ADJOURNED BY ILLNESS Opera Singer, Wife of Harold Mc- Cormick, Sick With Influenza, Fails To Appear New York, Dec. 18 UP—Mme. Ganna Walska (Mrs. Harold F. Mc- Cormick) was an Influenza patient today and her appeal against the ruling of the treasury department that she'must pay duty on jewelry e brought Into this country from France recently, was adjourned. Henry D. Buckley, representing her counsel, told judges of the cus- toms court that Mme. Walska was too ill to appear and the case was continued until the January term of court, \ Mme. Walska has contended that she was not subject to duty on the articles in question since her legal residence was in Paris. The treas- ury department in making its ruling maintained that her residence was determined by the old common law as that of her husband's in which case it would be in Chicago. e singer said that modern customs did not make the old common law ap- plicable and that a woman had as much right to establish her own residence as her husband.
