GERMS HE FOUGHT CONQUER FRANGS Reaowned Scientist Forced fo Halt Undulant Fever Study ‘Washington, Dec. 7 (®—Down with undulant fever, put out of ac- tion perhaps for the next two fo five years, Dr. Edward Francis is on the casualty list of the army of science for the second time in his distinguished career of 28 years as a4 public health service research worker, As in the former instance, when he suffered three montha with “rab- bit fever' ‘about 12 years ago, the germs on which he wus working overcame him soon after he had be- ®un his laboratory attack against them. His subsequent success in discov- ering, single-handed, the origin of this malady in rabbits and similar animals and their parasites, has brought him international fame. He called it tularaemia, but it is com- ing to be known as “Francis dis- case.” He began worp on undulant fever, also known as Malta fever, only a few months ago, taking up the health service's 10-ycar old investi- gation of this extremely disabling disease at the point where progress | made by three other workers had been stopped by its ravages. His ill- ness is expected to interfere serious- ly with work he was doing to de- velop & serum for prevention or cure of tularaemia. For him, {liness means idleness as well as physical suffering. and idle- ness 18 something he has always found it hard to bear. A bachelor. 56 years old, his work holds a charmn which has luredyhim, for vears, into his laboratory morning after morn- ing by 6 e'clock, although his asso- ciates do not begin work until®two or three hours later. Bxcept for very brief lunch per- iods, he has seldom lcft that littie room until 5 or 5:30 in the after- noon, an hour after closing time. Then, day after day. he has gone to dinner, out for a short walk, into a moving picture show, and home to bed. Rarely has he taken any part of the annual 30 day: sence to which he government employe. Now, unless the unexpected hap- pens and a relatively quick cure for undulant fever is discovered. he can not do any of these things he so in- 1ensely likes to do, and his friends feel that, for this reason he is likely 1o find his illness excessively irk- some, He 18 doing everything he can, with the knowledge he has been able to gain about the germs attacking him, to assist the physicians who arc working on his case, but his scien- tiife assoclates are not in the habit of letting their hopes obscure accu- mulated evidence. They recall that Miss Alice C. Tivans, the bacteriologist who hegan the investigution in 1918 and identi- fied undulant fever germs with those of contagious ahortion in cat- tle, has 1 and Dr. G. C. HEARING FOR SANTUCCI BEFORE POLICE BOARD Patrolman Will Not Appear Refore Discipling Committec, Chicf Mart Says Today, Chicf W. C. Hart of the police de- partment said today that Officer Vineenzo Santucci has been sum- moned to appear before the board of police commissioners next Tues- |day evening, and not before the committee on rules and discipline as is customary in cases of suspended officers. Whether or not the officer will be given a hearing, in view of the fact that he has appealed to su- perior court from the finding of | Judge M. . Saxe in local court, was not known today. Chief Hart said he did not know what procedure would be taken, and Chairman M. W. Bannan could not be reached this afternoon. Santucei was suspended last Sun- day by Chief Hart and was fined $100 and costs with a suspended jail sentence of 10 days, by Judge Saxe in police court yesterday, on the charge of operating an automobile while under the infiuence of liquor.
