SHITH THRILLS AT ALBANY'S NELCOME Finds “Adopted Gity” Oxt Strong to Greet bom . Albany, N. Y., Nov, 9 ®P—Gover- nor Alfred 8mith, wearing a new brown derby, returned last night to the atate capital and received an ovation of such magnitude that it brought tears to his cyes. He walk- ed from Union station at the head of a throng which completely filleq the broad main streets and cheered the “Happy Warrior" as lpstily in defeat as in victory. The strains of the now famous battle song, “The Sidewalks of New York,” played by the National Guard band, heralded the governor's arrival at 7:31 o'clock, and hun- dreds, who had been waiting an hour to greet him, swarmed about him and his party struggled through the packed station, escorted by state, city and New York Central police, Standing on the front veranda of the executive mansion, with Mrs. Bmith, his constant companion in his two months' strenuous campaign, by his side, he told the multitude which had followed in his triumphal wake from the station that he had had “wonderful réceptions all over the country,” but this welcome home to his adopted city was the ‘warmest of them all. As Governor 8mith, with Mrs, 8mith, their elder daughter, Mrs. John Adama-Warner, and Major ‘Warner, superintendent of state po- lice, and Mrs. Francis Quillinan, the 8mith's younger daughter, stepped from Williamy F. Kenny's private car “8t. Nicholas,” he was officlally welcomed by Mayor John Boyd Thacher of; Albany. Outside the station, where throngs milling about in a street ablaze with red fire roared out their welcome, cries of “Hello, Al;" “You're all right, AL" ringing above the din, the governor turned aside from his walting car, and with Mayor Thatcher and Judge J. J. Brady, newly elected to the children'’s court, on either arm, he st out on foot for his officlal residence, Mrs. 8mith and her daughters fol- lowed in a limousine. Mrs. Smith, was kept busy acknowledging greet- ings from friends and well wishers all along the Nne of march. The governor spoke briefly from the front porch of the executive manajon in response to repeated cries of “speech” from the crowd. “It is with @ deep sense of grati- tude that I meceive this reception,” he said. “I'have met with some wonderful ovations in my travels over the country from east to west. T recelved a.greeting in New York city such as might be expected in my native town but right here in Albany, my adopted city, T have ‘found the warmest and most cordial reception of aH. “I will never forget Albany,” he continued, “and you may be sure that I will come back here as often as I get the opportunity when have finished my term of office.” At the closing strains of “The Star Spangled Banner" the gover- nor held high the brown derby in & gesture of farewell.
