Shipments of Builders’ Hardware to Other Lands Show Gain In 1928 Statistics for First Nine Months Also Reveal In- crease in Export of Hand Tools From U. S. By GEORGE H. MANNI: {Washington Correspondent, N. B. Herald) Washington, D. C., Nov. 9—Ex- porty of hardware and allied pro- ducts, in which Connecticut annual- Iy plays a large part, showed a sharp increase in the first nine monthy of the year, as compared with the same period in 1927. Exporta for the nine’months end- ed last September 30 totalled $52,- 682,723, an increase of $5,211,053 over the $47,771,670 worth sent abroad by the United States during the similar 1927 period. Shipments of hand tools, cutlery, abrasives, stoves and furnaces, ac- cording to the Department of Com- merce statement issued here today, were far in advance of last year. Luilders' hardware, household uten- sils, plumbing fixtures and safes and vaults were other show increased foreign movement. Builders’ Hardware Increases Builders’ and similar hardware shipped during the period were val- ued at $6,742,846, a slight increase cver the 1927 nine-month shipments. Although decreases were noted in export of certain classes of builders’ hardware, such as padlocks, hinges, Dutts and hardware of brass and bronze, gains in exports of other f\n\ \7 Duplex Cretonne 44c Yard —Only for S8aturday. For the first nine months of the year, it reached .|a total value of $8.275,153, as com- pared with $7,674,776 in the corre- sponding 1927 nine months. Ship- ments of safety razor blades consti- tuted, however, the entire increase registered. The American export trade other than in razor blades declined from $1,827,087 in the 1927 period to $1, 679,599, Keen competition from continental manufacturers, said to be based on lower prices and very liberal terms, is partly responsible for the dropping off of such items as scissors, shears and knive. Hand Tool Shipments Shipments of hand tools were very satisfactory. These shipments dur- ing the first nine .onths of the year were valued at $15.342,390, an in- crease of $1,277,448 over the 1928 figures at this time of the year. Fine tools such as drills and reamers ap- peared to be in special d.mand. An increase of $789,932 in ship- ments of heating and cooking appli- |5 ances other than electric was shown this year, as compared with last. For the first nine 1928 months this group's exports totalled $3.918,017. Growing popularity of American stove and furnace equipment is de- duced from this showing. The vol- ume of trade in oil burners and parts was notable, reaching the fig- ure of $628,469 for the year thus far, NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1928, Exports of abrasives in this time amounted to $6,207.822, an increase of $794,914 over the 1927 mark at this stage of the year. Exports of artificial abrasives, particularly of abrasive paper and cloth, made up | the increase In this group.
