" TUBS FAVORED IV - NATIONAL LEAGUE Addition of Hornshy Makes Team a Pennant Gontender |« i | New-York, Nov. 9 (UP)—The aftermath of the Rogers Hornsby deal leaves the Chicago Cubs fav- orites to win the National league pennant and the Boston Braves with a manager who has never play=d | professional baseball. The task of stopping the Cubs with Hornsby, Wilson, Cuyler, | Stephenson and Hartnett may prove more than the St. Louis Card; New York Giants, Cincinnati and Pittshurgh Pirates are equal to next season. Hornsby's punch added to the al- ready strong 120 club may mean the first pennant for the Cubs since 1918, Freddy Maguire, who batted -274 last season. and Percy Jones, an erratlc southpaw with a sorni Saturday Great Savings at soupbone, were the only two regu- lars who departed. Leggett, Cun- ningham and Seibold, the other three players, were only minor leaguers, however promising they may be. Unless too many temperamental stars prove the undoing of the Cubs, Joe McCarthy's club ought to dom: inate the National league next Sea- son. McCarthy has proved unusual- ly adept at handling prima donnas, failing only with Grover Cleveland Alexander. Alex refused to live up to any training rules but his own and when McCarthy found he couldn’t handle Alex so traded him to the Cardinals. Hack Wilson and Kiki Cuyler, who have had trouble with other major league managers, have been success- fully managed by MecCarthy. Hornsby's gambling record at 8t Louis and New York undoubtedly contributed to his downfall with the and Giants and he has word to the Cub officlals that he will not indulge in any form of gambling while with the Chicago team. Just how well Hornshy will get along with the other Cubs' players will not be known until he takes his place in the lineup. Wherever he has played Hornsby has alays had NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1928 run-ins with the players. Of the driving type, Horusby doesn't make it easy on any players who doesn't appear to give everything he has in cvery game. Douthit had trouble with Hornsby at St. Louis and I.ind- strom and Grimes were at outs with Rajah when he was with the Giants. The position of the Braves is even more distressing now than it was dur- |ing the last few weeks of the Na- |tional league season when the Braves played like a team of minor |leaguers. Judge Fuchs has traded his best player and named himself manager. No new strength has been added Johnny Evers, who helped the | Braves rise from the cellar to the | National league pennant in 1914, |has been signed as assistant man- |ager. | The weakness of the Braves and | Phillles last season made the Na- tional league a six-club league.
