- MRS, MOSELEY HITS AT GOY. TRUMBULL (Continued From Page 12.) tion with intent to deceive the voters of Connecticut. He is reported to bave said that Governor 8mith has given an extravagant administration to New York state, and adds that New York's interest charges alone would run the state of Connecticut /for three-quarters of a year. Why shouldn't they? New York has twelve times the number of inhabi- tants Connecticut has; it would be strange indeed if Connecticut could not be run for three-quarters of a /year on a portion of New York's ex- Ppenses, *“Gov, Trumbull says that Smith's government has been extravagant. New York st spends $16 a year for each inhabitant of the state; Connecticut spends §32 a year per inhabitant. What I wouid like to ask Gov. Trumbull {1 this: 8mith, spending $16 per inhabitant, is extravagant, are not you, spending $32 per inhabitant, twice as ex- travagant?”’ “And please notice what the citi- sens of New York are getting for $16 that we are not getting for $32. They are getting adequate accommo- ‘dations for the insane, while the asylum at Middletown is so jammed that five people are being crowded in where facilities exist for taking care of only four. {“For $16 New York is getting a tem of state parks and recrea- tipn grounds that will be of vast efit to the health of the populace; with $32 the Connecticut govern- ment is refusing to purchase proper- ty for shore line parks, recommend- ed by its own park board and that despite the fact that Hammonessett stgte park has pro-ed a profitable in- vestment, making money as well as heailth for the state, For $16 New York is eliminating grade crossings; for $32, a neighbor of mine finds herself in the hospital and her com- panion dead because of a grade crossin, accldent last week. With $16 New York has a hospital for World War veterans; with $32, Con- nacticut, 10 years after the war, has only just acquired a site for such a hospital. The democratic party of Connecticut in its platform has promised parks for the children and the poor; hospital care for the vet- erans; decent accommodations for the insane, the feeble-minded, the tubercular, the deaf, dumb and blind. “Two other republican catch- words I wish to touch on briefly. One is that ‘The woman's vote is for Hoover. That is true in some cases, but you have to pick ‘the woman' veey carefully; any next one won't do, because she's likely to be voting for Smith. Amo:gst my acquaint- ances, I have found two normally democratic women who expect to vote for Hoover, -~d one of them is doing it as a result of the whispering campaign. I have found 20 normal- ly republican women who have climbed out of Hoover territory up onte the fence and are climbing down, or leaping down into the F-+ith lot. Two to Hoover, 20 to Smith—that's the drift amongst my acquaintances. “Tammany” “And the final catchword that the republicans have fallen back on for 80 years is ‘Tammany.’ Fifty years ago, it had some meaning; it meant ‘scandal.’ But the scandals of to- day are not on Tammany. The sewer acandal in New York belongs to an ) &3 Conn ises Doct Praises or There isn't a mother living who won't agree that no half-sick child should be the subject for an experi- ment with medicines of uncertain merit. When your child is bilious, headachy, half-sick, feverish, rest- less, with coated tongue, bad breath, on appetite or energy, you know that nine times out of ten it's a sign her little stomach and bowels no appetite or energy, you know that for over fifty years leading physicians have endorsed one prep- aration for this condition there doesn’t seem to be any reason for “trying” things. Rich, fruity California Fig Syrup €lears the little stomach and bowels gently, harmlessly and in a hurry. It regulates the bowels, gives tone and strength to them and to the stom- ach; and helps to give your child new strength, energy and vitality. Thousands of Connecticut mothers praise it. Mrs. J. McCarter, 39 Buckingham St., Hartford, says: “I'll never forget the doctor who got me to give my little girl, Dorls, Califoruia Fig Syrup. Nothing else helped her bowels, which seemed to be weak. Bhe wa. very nervous, run-down and billous before 1 gave her Fig Syrup, but it stopped her trouble quick. I have used it with her for colds and little upset spells ever since. I consider her a Fig Syrup baby.” Insist on the genuine article. that the carton bears the “California.” Over four bottles used a year. Bee word million anti-Tammany administration. True, it is a democratic scandal, or I should say, the Cemocratic scandal —there are no others. And when Smith heard of it, he appointed a republican prosec‘cr to investigate it.” What eagerness have the repub- 11 ns .hown tc cssist in the expos- iug of Vare of Pcansylvaiia; of Mrs. Kr _p, republican state secre- tary of New York; of Fall and Den- by and Doheney and 8inclair of the oil scandal; of Forbes of the Veter- ans’ Bureau; of Governor McCray of Indiana—and a host of others? Dur- in_ the Kansas City convention, Will Rogers id that t' > Indiana delega- tion was trying to get a day off to g0 visit their republican friends in Fort Leavenworth penitentiary. “As 1 blessed contrast to this tale of crime and mismanagement, look at Smith’s record .s governor of New York. Five hundred thousand republicans thought it so good that they split their kets to vote for his reelection in :720. It has been praised by such eminent republicans as R. Fulton Cutting, long time head of the Citizens' Union; Nicholas Murray Butler and “harles Evans Hughes. Now it Tammany is wick- ‘|ed as some would have you believe, obviously the man with this splendid record is not a Tammany tool. And it Smith is a Tammany tool, as the same jeople woul® have you believe, obviously Tammany is not wicked, but enlightened, humanitarian, and all the other wonderful things the republicans have said about this record. Either way, there's credit due someone, If you wish, you may give it to the reformed Tammany; NEW BRITAIN CONNECTICUT, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1928 Crooked Streets Are Asset, Boston Man Says Boston, Oct. 16 (UP)—Boston's crooked streets, which have per- plexed visitors for many genera- tions, today had been elevated to a place among the city’s natural as- seta, Professor Miller McClintock of lations now in force here, told mem- bers of the Cambridge club in a speech last night that jokes to the effect that Bostog streets *“follow old cowpaths” had no basis in fact. The city's streets, radiating like the spokes of a wheel, afforded short cuts to important points, he declared, and were more desirably laid out in some respects than the streets of newer cities. FACE MICHIGAN SOON Columbus, O., Oct. 16 (UP)— Nothing is being left undong by Ohio university coaches this week in preparing their men for the game Saturday with Michigan. It looks like an Ohio year and the coaches are anxious to take advantage ef the Wolverines' apparent weakness to even up for some of the many I\‘lrubbing Michigan has given Indi- ana in past years. H., Oct. 16 (UP) —The ill-starred submarine 8-4, which sank oft Provincetown last December with a loss of 40 lives, reentered naval service here today as a tester of safety devices, Raising of an Americana flag was the only ceremony which marked the reatoration to active service of the salvaged and reconditioned sub- mersible, Lieutenant N, 8.
