HUSBAND DEFENDS GIRL BANK BANDIT Texas Case Brings to Light Marriage in College Austin, Tex., Dec. 14—(P— Otis | Rogers, young Amarillo attorney who malntained secrecy regarding his marriage last year to Rebecca Bradley while they were students at the University of Texas, today in alding in defense of his wife who is charged with robbing the Farmers National bank at Buda. Married at Georgetown, Texas, | October, last, they continued their | university courses, the husband | graduating from the law college while his bride was awarded a| bachelor of arts degree. They decid- ed that Rogers' income as an at- torney might prove inadequate to support a home and agreed to separ- ate while he developed his practice. Rebecca obtained a position as stenographer in the office of Dan | Moody, attorney general and govern- or-clect, and continued her univer- | sity work with the view of securing a higher degree. Rogers opened a law office at Aamarilo and so well | did they guard their secret that Rebecca’s mother with whom she | lived here, denied the ma e when Otis announced he was coming | 1o the defense of his wife. Discuss Defenso Meeting in the office of an attor- ney employed by Rebecca, the couple last night discussed the state charge | that she drove her automobile to| Buda, 20 miles from here, Saturday and displaying a pistol forced two | hank employes into a vault and es- caped with mearly $1,000 in cur- rency. Rogers sald he would ap- pear in district court today with his wife's counsel in an effort to secure her release on bond after a lower court yesterday refused a similar re- | quest on the ground the charge of robbery with firearms was a capital offense. | Rogers maintains that legal pre- cedent has established the necessity | to prove shooting occurred during the course of the robbery or other circumstances of such import as to | warrant refusal of bail. If this ar-| gument fails, his wife must remain | in jail until the February term of | court. | Mrs. Rogers has refused to disc the details of her adventures befo and after her arrest Saturday. Offi- | cers declared she told them she Tobbed the bank for a “thrill” and | that she thought the bankers were | “saps” for allowing a girl to rob| them. Asked to explain her denial of her marriage last night, she said she believed that announcement | should come from her husband. The hearing today is attracting | wide attention as Rogers became well known in Texas for his forensic | ability which won him a place on | the university debeating team which | defeated Dartmouth and Columbia last year.
