The annual report for the last Fear, made public today, lifts the distress dignal of this bee-hive of activity high above the national capitol, and pleads for more help, larger quarters and augment propriations for the force. Applications received during the year totaled over 110,000, or one for each 1,000 of population in the country, and some 6,000 more than last year. The end of the year finds the office with 58,000 applica- tions on hand, despite disposition of 85,000 cases from the arrears cal- endar during the past three years. For the first time in history, the patent office this year undertook disposal of accumulated working models on a large scale. Some 50,- 000 Gesigns patented prior to 1880, some of them of the most import- ant in American history, were turn- ed over to the National M m; 2,500 were relinquished to heirs of patentees, and eral thousand sold at public auction—for a grand total of $6,540.
