87 GIVEN FINES OF $2:00 EACH American Malleable Iron Cast-| ings Case Is Ended Cleveland, Aug. 6 (P—A federal court fight of almost two and & ha)f years duration against forty-eight members of the American Malleable Castings Association and forty.seven large Malleable Iron Castings Com- panies was ended today when eighty: seven defendants appeared before Féderal Judge Westenhaver, entered pleas of nolo contendere and were tined $2,500 each. The indictment upon wWhieh the defendants were brought to trial was returned by a federal grand jury at Cleveland in March, 1924, and fol- lowed a long federal investigation, The defendants bitterly fought the government's efforts to bring them to trial. use, but the government finally won in each case. The most important and most pro- |1€ bought the burglar alarm from a tracted phase of the resistance grew out of the refusal of defendants liv- ing outside of the Cleveland federal court district to appear here for trial. More than two score trials and court pruceedings, involving ha- Dbeas corpus actions and appeals to cireuit courts and the United supreme court were required to se cure extradition for the defendants. Finally by virtue of a sypreme court ruling the defendants were or- dered to appean in Cleveland for trial. Date was set for September 13, 1926. The decision fo enter the ‘“nolo contendere” plans, which are virtual- 1y pléas of guilty, as the expression means that the indictment is not contested, came at a meeting eight days ago in Washington between Attorney General Sargent, his Assi t Russell Hardy, and representa- of the American Malleablo “astings Association, The indictment returned against the defendants charged them with manufacturing seventy-five ver cent of the annual production of malle- able castings in the United States, with having conspired since Janu ary, 1917, to assign and allot t buyers of malleable iron castin among themselves and to fiv prices These arrangements, the indictmen alleged, would serve to competition. The indictments further charged that the American Malleable Cast- ings association was used in carr ing out the alleged conspiracy. indictment was returned undgr the provisions of the Sherman antl-trust act. Mazimum fines for corporations for this charge is 35,000 and for in- lividuals is $5,000 and a year's im- prisonment; the $2.500 fine wa agreed upon at the conference last The The finés meted out today totalled $217,500. Several weeks ago five of the or- iginal 95 defendants entered and were fined an gregate of $14.- 500 this brought the total of the fines to $282,000. pleas Eleven City Employes Practically every legal ac- | s|a drawer, eliminaic | HELEN DROBNIS DEAD School—Death in Suffield. from high school graduate from in 1928 and ness. | Drobins and made her honfe at |Smalley street.
