C, Oct, 16—Tal- O-Hal, island port of call’ of the homeward bound United States fleet which has been visiting in the Pacific, s described as a “port of traged in a bulletin the Washington, D. The hundred thousand or more who peopled the cleven islands u century ago have dwindled to 3,000 or 4,000, Rosy Future Seemed Assured “When France took the islands over in 1842 the future seemed rosy to the white settlers who went | there. The islands teemed with su- perlatively healthy, brawny natives. The rainfall was abundant and vegetation grew rankly. Dreams of | exceedingly productive coconut, | cotton and vanilla plantations filled the heads of French adventurers, Tai-O-Hal was bullt with these | dreams in mind, and_stores, inns, ' churches, schools and" another ac- companiment of civilization — g jall — sprang up. “But thinge did not work out as had been expected. The Marquesans | did not care to become plantation laborers. They had led lives of case, spending their time In idle- ness, in gathering nature's fyuits, and in war among themselves. Some unscrupulous planters tried rum and opium as inducements to labor, They brought a certain tem- porary euccess, but they helped to | bring a speedy end to all hope for | the survival of the Marquesan peo- ple. (To drunkenness and sodden- ness were soon added the white man's diseases — diseases which meant little to the civilizations of America and Europs that had be. come largely immune to them, but | which carried off the islanders like files, Once Teeming Valleys Deserted “Tai-O-Hai, which had waxed, as quickly waned. Today less than 160 people live in the village and there is only T handful of whites. Abandoned bulldings are on every hand; trader's shops, dwellings, an inn, a leper house, The once popu- lous valleys back in Nukahiva have from been abandoned to the rank | growth; only the half smothered platforme on which dwellings stood tell of thelr past use by man. In the valleys not wholly aban- doned, the few survivors have moved near the sea for neighborli- | he Marquesas are in two | groups, Nukahiva lies in the i northern group.
