T T A e e SOUTH SEA ISLES NAT S0 WONDERFUL Romancers Distort. Pictures of Lile There Tokyo Oct, 9 (= shopping expediticn, 2,000-mile from Jaluit, one of the South islands, to Tokyo, was recently made by the Rev, C. R. Teina, a representative of the American Board of Missions, wlo has been stationed in this lonely, far-awRy post for 35 years. In the all Tslands, h Jalult bel ngs, wheie fhere nre no auto- woblles and where one pays ealls or a distance of 200 miles, the v. Mr. Heine reports that con- crable progress la belng made among the natives under the su- pervision of the Jepanese, Most of mans, he reports, left vol- the beginning of the World war and the rest were de- ported when the war ended and the fslands wera put under Japan- ese mandate. Now there is only one other white on the island beslde Dr. Heine, who fs an Australian. There are no hotcls and no mo- tion picture shows and no amuse- | ments, and the roads are mere pathways not more than eight feet wide, cut between the plantations and the jungle. “No, the South Sea Islands are not exactly as painted by the ro- mancers,” said Dr. Helne, “as far as comfortable living 1s concerned. But it 1s quite true that the 9,500 natives of the Marshall group are mearly all well-to-do, because of an industrious development of the fand. There is no great wealth and et there ia no poverty at all, Some of the native chleffains even have private yachts which take them from one Island to the other, each one being between 60 and 100 miles apart. They may even have planes some day. “But if one wants to call on a white friend in the South Seas, the nearest are in the Gilbert Islands, which are under the British man- date and eome 300 miles away “Life in the South Sea islands is for the most t uneventful,” says Dr. Heine, “and there was one period shortly -after the World war when for more than a year the in- habitants were without newspapers from the outside world. There had been stories circulated in Sydney and other quar to the effect that the Germans had prepared elaborate forlifications and secret supply bases in some of the South Sea lIslandsk For this reason the Japancse and other Allled powers prohibited the islanders from any egommunication with the out-world, and boats were allowed to stop only for the purpose of landing provigions.
