0 667 SURVEY ASAINS ufmm Re-investigation of Evidence| " Sought by Gommission Washington, Sept. 26 investigation of evidence gathered by the federal trade commission in an | inquiry into the tobacco trade has been orderad. The commission will appoint in- vestigators other than those who as- sembled its original evidence, as a result of protests made by coopera- tive marketing associations as against the method followed and the tentative findings. The decislon of the commission followed a conference at which Aaron Sapiro, counsel for the na- tional councll of cooperative associ- time, and Earl Davis, attorney for tobacco assoclations, protested in particular against the course of Earl Haynes, the commission's chief in- vestigator, in the inquiry. No state- ment of findings will be made, Chalr- man Van Fleet sald, prior to the final report of the commission to the senate. The commission's inquiry is in compliance with a resolution intro- duced by Senator Ernst, Kentucky, ordering a report as to whether the American Tobacco company and the British American Tobacco company had boycotted cooperative assocla- | tions, Investigators prepared a ten- taitve report in which {t was de- clared that some officers of one of the tobacco associations had organ- ized a corporation which took large profits for redrying tobacco. It was against this section that protest was | made, The cooperative councll, in a state- ment today, declared “the contro versy involves President Coolidge suceessful campaign to ‘deliberal a number of governmental boar: and commissions, notably the trade and tariit bodies, by appointing standpat personnel. “Opposition members of congress.” it said, “have intimated that the novement reflects the friendliness of arge corporate interests which have been etaunch campaign contributors. “At any rate, the fedcral trade ‘ommission i now in full standpat ontrol just as is the tariff commis- <ion.
