RISKS HIS LIFE “FOR A $20 NOTE Willlmantlc Man Nearly Drowns Trying to Save It “Willlmantic, June 26.—A stoker at, the Willimantic mills of the ‘Willlmantic Thread company had & narrow escape from drowning yes- terday afternoon when he went into the Willimantic river in an attempt to ‘rescue a $20 bill. Officlals of the plant refused to give his name but he is known among his fellow workers as “Red” Smith of Boston. He had reached the middle of the river when he was aselzed with cramps and sank. Four men wero necessary to rescue him and bring him ashore. The $20 blll was owner by Orville Loveland. It was part of his week- ly pay recelved yesterday. Love- land tore up his empty pay envelope and threw it out of the window into the river and unconsclously threw the $20 bill with it. Smith offered to rescue the $20 bill for $2, and it was in attempting to fulfill this offer that he nearly lost his life, The $20 bill was not recovered, BUSINESS REVIEW A;'nmug Manufacturing Industries in 1923 Attain Stride Comparable "“With That of 1919, Washington, June 26 (P—Amer- fean manufacturing industries in 1923 attained a stride comparable with the abnormal activity of 1919, it was shown today,in census bureau reports for New York and Pennsyl- vania, the two greatest manufactur- ing states. Fleet o Australia Gives Natives imndon, June 26 (P—The corre- spondent of the Daily il at Syd- ney, New South Wales, says the visit of the American fleet will pro- vide Australians as well as the American bluejackets with the nov- elty of handling British gold coins. The men of one scction of the fleet, the correspondent says, are bringing to Sydney $1,200,000 which the local authorities have agreed to change into 240,000 gold sovereigns, the bulk of which will doubtless be promptly circulated. The same thing will occur at Mel- bourne, where another scction of the fleet 4s taking $800,000. Gold coins have not been in circulation in Australia since early in the war.
