» Science to Cure All the lemg Dead What a Famous Savant Has to Say About the New Plan to Close Up the Wlpe Out Illlteracy and Make Over the Morons by His Method of Gland Control WE look more to the endocrine glands and less to the head, shall we be better able to eradicate insanity? During the recent convention of the American Chemical Society at Washing- ton, D. C., Dr. William J. A. Bailey, director of the American Endocrine Lab- oratories of New York, who is authority for the above statement, made some startling criticisms on the present meth- ods of treating insane patients, and cited the case of Harry K. Thaw as substanti- ating his contention. Dr. Bailey is a graduate of Harvard and the University of Vienna and en- joys a wide reputation on radioactivity and its therapeutic application. He has written the following article exclusively » for this newspaper. By DR. WM. J. A. BAILEY 1t is difficult for m: of us to believe that all mental activity—even pure rea- son—is a chemist: procm: but we have today overwhelming evidence to this ef- fect. And what's more, this chemistry proc- ess has its origin he endocrine glands. So definite is our knowledge of this sub- ject that I am utterly at a loss to know why my remarks at Washington have caused such consternation in the medical world. What surprises me most of all is the utter neglect on the part of many who care for the insane to apply the les- sons of the endocrines that we have learned in regard to their control over mental functions. It is true that some cases of insanity are due to injury or other causes outside the in- fluence of the glands, but by far the largest number of cases are of an endocrine deficient type. Dr. W. J. A, Bai- ley’s new method for helping the insane is widely used apt to become a cretin. Restore the thyroid to normal—or inject a little of the secretfon from the thyroid of an animal—and we return the cretin into a fairly normal human being, both men- tally and physically. This is no theory nor figment of the imagination. It has been a most common treatment for years. It is well known that when we are in dangerous situations, at which time the adrenal and thyroid pour copious quantities of their secretions into the blood streams, we think more keenly and Many old people I meet experience a partial loss of memory, new ideas do not come to them so rapidly, their sen- sations are not so rapid, they have lost much of their fo nnoveonnesi of mind. When we ionize their glands and thus increase the secretions we find that the It has long been known to medical science that the glands of the body have a direct influence on physical develop- ment. If some of the glands are overactive giants result, while sluggishness produces dwarfs For years a certain type of imbecility called treated lar condition. “cretinism” has been successf ull\ y correcting the faulty glandu- When the thyroid gland does not serve its owner, he or she is, mental processes are among the very first signs of improvement. The mind is not a thing apart from the rest of the body. The brain is an organ with a job to do, just as the Insane Asylums, A very important piece of apparatus used by Dr, which the Bailey is the radiendocrinator, by gamma ray is sent into the body, which is part of the process devel- oped by the physician kidney or liver. All of them carry out their functions as a chemistry process to a large extent. Thus, thought, im- pressions, acuteness of perception, sen: , ideas, conception, imagination— ] are products of chemistry reactions that can very readily be demonstrated— arise from the magic ooze of the en- docrine glands. That indefinable “love” is simply the product of the chem- istry reactions of our ductless glands. Every sex imstinct within us through the endocrines and the differ- ent types of partially insane complica- tions that are ascribed to “love” can be corrected as soon as the sex endocrines are normalized. something we call arises NGER and fear can be traced directly to the endocrines every time—usu- ally the adrenals and thyroid. He is very acute to perceive and discriminate. The person with a lowered thyroid action cgnnot. discriminate, be- cause he does not feel stimuli so readily. It is possible to take up step by step every prominent mental condition and trace it directly to the endocrine glands to show that memory, imagination, poise, judgment, moods and the like have Ledger Company 4¢-€-24- Many members of the medi- cal profession believe that Dr. Bailey’s method for the treating of insanity will be the means of freeing many asylum inmates T Radio activity has also been used in stimulat- ing inactive glands. In the picture is shown the instruments used in radiotherapy in the Curie Foundation, Paris, under the direction of Mme. Cutie ¢ their source in chemistry combinations every time. We can give a laboratory demonstration of hysteria, shellshock, nervous breakdowns, neuroses of vari- ous kinds as well as the subconscious— all on an endocrine basis. It is so simple, so readily analyzed, that I am wondering why a great institute has not becn established long ago to handle in- sanity as an endocrine disturbance, and correct it just as we would correct any other physical condition. The evidence is so complete that the general apathy is past understanding. In regard to my discovery of the, technique of endocrine ionization by gamma rays, which, by the way, is far different from fonic medication, I want to explain that I use no electrical cur- rents of any kind. My technique em- braces the use of the gamma rays from radioactive preparations. AM advocating no new theory—no untried process. My technique of radiating the endocrines by gamma rays is purely physical action that is well known to any well-versed chemist or physicist. We simply stimulate the endocrines to increase activity and hence the production of more hormones to make up for the deficiency that may cause the physical weakness of the brain cells. K The greater number of mental defec- tives inherit their deficiency—yet the parents may not have been mentally un- balanced. If each parent has some de- ficient endocrine condition, this complex is passed on to the child and may at some time result in a lack of correlation of the child’s endocrines that causes in- sanity. ‘The child may be normal until some endocrine change of a major na- ture takes place in the body. Then we get the old familiar dementia praecox. The thing to do ghen is to restore the endocrine balance once more, get them functioning normally again, and we can cure the child. There are a great many “queer” folks who never get as far as the sanitarium. How many of us do not have our little eccentricities, nervous spells, and like disturbances at times? If we examine ourselves “ carefully, we will find that there is some endocrine disturbance. When we don’t “feel well” we are apt to become irritable. Well, then, insan- ity that is of a nature requiring com- mitment to ah institution is the same condition in an exaggerated way. Sometimes it is very hard to draw the line. It just depends on how badly the endocrine balance is upset. There is no telling what kind of complex may result from faulty endocrine. It may be a mild form of brain inaction—plain stupidity —or it may be an absolute clogging of the tissues between the brain cells, pre- venting the passage of nerve impulset, thus causing downright imbecility. We have made a fetish of the mind control long enmough. Let us now place the situation on a rational basis, as that of chemistry change. There is ample evidence to warrant these asser- tions. We have had the experience in our own clinic here in New York. Others may do likewisegr There is no secret to my technique. Perhaps other workers will develop better methods than I have discovered, but I do know that by my technique, known as radiendocrination we can very promptly correct endocrine deficiency, and by so doing, correct the physiological and pathological condi- tions resulting therefrom. A ONE would think that the splendid work of Banting with insulin, Kan- dall with thyroxin, Abel with pituitzin and Takamini with adrenalin would stir the profession to efforts along these lines in connection with mental aberration. It isn't necessary to cage the mental weakling in order to keep him from doing harm—such incarceration belongs to, the days of witchcraft—science has discovered the remedy and before long we shall have clinics to treat these un. fortunates, just as we have clinies for the treatment of those suffering from other physical diseases.
