Rockwell Park 'Lagoon Guard Returns To Grind On Gridiron Gratton O’Connell, Life Saver, Goes Back to Bos- ton College to Train for Football‘Season. (Bpecial to 1d.) Bristol, Sept. 19.~After a summer replete with activity, which meant an average of three to four lives saved a day, Life Guard Gratton O'Connell of the Rockwell Park bathing lagoon has entered upon his training with the Boston Col- lege eleven to add to his laurels on the gridiron. It was the local boy who tore oft a 30 yard dash in 1921 for a touchdown which broke up the annual classic with the Holy Cross eleven, which had arrived in Boston fresh with a victory over Harvard. The following year O'Connell, in his old position at right end, paved the way for Holy Cross”downfall by a brilllant recep- tion of a forward pass and a run| over the chalklines to a score, Guard O'Connell has been in charge of the bathers at Rockwell Park for the last three years and during that time, his rescues have been a source of city-wide comment. On one occasion during the last | summer, three helpless bathers were pulled out almost within five min- utes of each other. With hundreds of bathers in the pool at one time ay guard must keep a sharp eye about the waters. This occurred one afternoon last July when an apparently good swim- mer was selzed with a cramp in a deep part of the pool and went down. Swimmers nearby thought that the man was fooling and paid no attention but not so with Guard O'Connell. He jumped into the wa- ter and forging his way to the scene dove down to reappear with the helpless swimmer in his grasp. The man was removed to the shore and recovered only after strenuous ef- forts at resuscitation. Being of a modest nature, Mr.| 0’'Connell has taken his rescues| more as a matter of course and rarely has made mention of his rec- ord, His commendable work could not escape observation, however, as members of the park commission as well ag citizens quickly realized that Rockwell Park had a lifeguard of more than ordinary ability and one who took his post serdouély. His ex- ‘reme vtate in handling young swim- mers at the lagoon and his vigilance brought many words of praise when his name was mentioned and the parie-gommissioners. made sure that he would resume his duties when the college term ended for the sum- mer., Gratton O'Connell is a native boy, the son of the late Dr. T.
