T am at a loss to fol- low the logic of the president's de- fense. “Even more increditable, however, than the president's reply above quot- ed, is his eulogistic reference to the conduct of the veterans’ bureau under the last administration, For the pres- ident, as a presidential candidate to boast of what his party did for the disabled soldiers through the depart- ment and to ignore the fact that his party placed and maintained un- til forced out at the head of that de- partment a man now under indict- ment for stealing its funds, takes a sort of political courage 1 did not know existed. . “If this is not complacency in the fact of corruption, what is 1t? It | seems impossible that Mr. Coolidge «hould think his budget an economy argument, an adequate answer to a corruption that has shaken the faith of the people in their government, or that he thinks them so forgetful that they will not recall the fact about what members of his own party have called ‘the tragic looting of the vet- erans’ bureau'.” HING OF SPAIN Boy's Brain Conceived Woird | Story Which Caused Uneasiness | A plot m{ Spain” was | has been | traced to its source by the Spanish | pmbassy, department of justice agents, | Wash which the tor Aug. 15.- King slaughter of | against them would result in suspen- | ceives fully as many FINE SILK DRESS CLEARANCE _SMART MODELS—ORIGINALLY PRICED TO $19.75 $8 We've taken Dresses of every description, regard- less of former price and drastically reduced them to Eight Seventy-Five.
