e - NO SYMPATHY FOR PETERSONIN COURT Man Arrested for Non-Support Is Denounced by Judge The high cost of living has no ter- rors for David Peterson, of 1056 Smal- ley street, an clectrician employed by Landers, Frary & Clark, because Da- vid has found a way to beat it. When the family larder got low or other circumstances did not seem pleasant to Peterson he took his meals in restaurants and sometimes slept in other places than his own home. _ Ior the wife and three children, he religiously gave every week, any- where from $5 to $7 with which sum they were expected to buy food for themseclves ‘and . often for the hus- band, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Wil- liam M. Greenstein had Peterson haled into court this morning charged with non-support. He failed to re- ceive any sympathy from the bench. It is true that for a year prior to last February Peterson did not work. Just why an electrician should not work for a year was not brought out in court, but he finally obtained a Job and went to work. He contended through his attorney, Donald P. Gaff- ney, that he was paying off some debts contracted during the year he was not working, but a statement from Judge Alling who examined his accounts shows that he has failed to account for almost half of his earn- ings. Mr. Peterson according to the evi- dence occasionally gave his wife as much as §10 or $11 in one week, out of which she could take all she want- ed to feed the tamily after paying $5 on back rent er coal bills. One week he left 810 on the table when i he went to work fe was and because hi room at the time received no instructions. She $4 or $5 of it on a coal bill and w he came home that night she there was a “family argument.” According to Probation Officer E. C. Connolly, Peterson carns on an average of $31.63 ecach week while the defendant testified on the stand that he sometimes does some outside electrical work as well. He is paid at the factory at the tate of 65 cents per hour and has carned in four weeks $126.66, of which his wife has reccived less than $40, Peterson e&ered in defense the fact that he is gradually paying off some oid bills, but Judge Alling remarked “On your own statementy you have carned over $1,000 since last Febru- ary and you have accounted for a It tie over $500. Your family is trying to get along on $5 or $6 a week.” Peterson accused relatives of his wife of making trouble between them. Judge Alling said: I think a good deal of the trouble is due to yown, It 1sn't for you to say and find fauit with the place where you live.,” This wus in reply to a statement that the house in which the family lived was not satisfactory te the husband not in the said Peterson stated that his home life was not pleasant for him and for that reason he often took his meals out and sometimes slept elsewhere, “Do you do anything to make your wife comfortable or to try to encour- age her,” demanded the court. Pet- erson said they lived upstairs over his wife's folks who made things unpleas- ant for him. “You're not obliged to live there,” said the court. “She won’t move,” replied the defendant, referring to his wife. “I don’t blame her under the circumstances,” said Judge Alling. “You ought to be ashamed of yourself to ask a woman to support herself and three children on $5 or $6 a week.” The case was continued until De- cember 22. In the meantime Mr. Con- £ NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1923 nolly will attempt to effect a recon- ciliation. Thomas Szorack, charged with vio- lation of the liquor law, was given the benefit of the doubt and discharged for lack of evidence. He was de- fended by Attorney P, F. McDon- ough. Fred Swan was charged with grancy. Detective Sergeant McCue testified that he had no home, no work, cats when he can get it and sleeps wherever he can. He was senr tenced to 30 days in jail. Judgement was suspended and Mr. Connolly will try to find him a job. va- REN 424 MAIN ST..BEGLEY'S BLK. All Morning Specials—7 to 12 A. M.
