an HARROWING SGENES AT ELLIS_ISLAND New York Official Tells Rotarians of & Nation’s Responsibility Abuse and ill treatment of immi- grants at Ellis Island is making anar- chists “and criminals of those wha come to our shores, according to Frederick A. Wallis, commissioner of correction and former police com- missioner and commissioner of the port of New York, at the Rotary club meeting today. Over 100 men attended the lun- cheon of the Rotary club when “Em- ployer and Employee” day was ob- served. Members of the Lions club were present also as guests. Mr. Wallis spoke of the problems of immigration. He said, “the great- est problem is not immigration, it is the immigrant, “The first impres- sions we give the people who come to our shores may mniake them. the best of citizens or turn them into anar- chists over night,”” he declared. H spoke of government and other officials who show over officiousness «nd how much of that he found when investigating conditions on Ellis Is- land. “I love the uniform but when it is being used for some low, vile, selfish object, T say it s time to rip it off and give it to some one who realizes and appreciates its sanctity.” He described in indignant terms the treatment he found being accord- ed immigrants about to be deported. He spoke of the filth of the building and said, “I wouldn’t drive the hogs on my farm through as much filth as there was on that floor.” “Over 300,000 meals a month were served in one dining room and the people never were given a drink of water.” He said the floor had not been scrubbed for months, the water was off for fear the floors would wet and over 200 people were into a hardly big turned become crowded cnough for 30, He spoke of robbery of immigrants in New York, One family was charged $200 for taxi fare to Rivington street, A whole group paid for tickets to Des Moines, lowa, and were given sub- way tickets instead by son crook. Lllis Island 1s literally a ‘“vale of tears " “Whenever 1 saw a boat load of policemen come the the island I knew there were a lot of Irish girls on the island,” he said, Some of the people hadn’t seen sugar for 6 years and the commissioner told many amusing in- cidents of the first lee cream and mice pie the immigrants ever saw, They discovered the jee cream was sweet 80 they spread it on their bread like preserves, The mince ple they turned it into thelr soup, stirred the whole business together and drank it. room “There is no word so full of mean- ing and so little understood as ‘Amer- fcanization’,” he said. “"Americaniza- tion is just interpreting in deeds and good will the best ideals of our American life You can't ecrown Americanization down the immigrant's throat, you've got to let him learn that this great country is his friend, “The anarchists are not the most dangerous men we have in this couns try. The most dangerous are those who g0 about ouict sad insidiously, des stroying and underanining the ideals of the country.” He drew a striking picture of the poor immigrant who Is taught from Lis mother's knee, who sacrifices, and starves himself to go to what he is taught is a new heaven He arrives with ne home, no business, no money and Uncle Sam tells him to go back. “We ghould examine every immi- grant who wants to come to America, long before he puts foot on the ship on the other side.” He deseribed the immigration as similar which would bring “the run of the mines” to New Britain, here to be cleancd and separated from the dirt and rock and other undesirable ma terial, Heart breaking scenes throwing themselves on the the ships and beating their present system of to a system of women floor of heads You Will Do Better At Axelrod’s Are Out of the High Rent District We Toiletware —for Christmas Axelrod’s Pharmacy Park cor. RORABACK VISITS PRESIDENT TODAY (Continued from First Page) endorsed George W. Klett of New Britain for the job, and said the com- mittee still stands pledged to Klett for this job. The movement to have Klett appointed about a year ago was suddenly checked when State’s Attor- ney Hugh Alcorn came to Washing- ton and made a vigorous protest to the justice department personally and on behalf of the anti-saloon forces and some groups of church people of | Hartford against Keltt's appointment. No steps have been taken in the matter since and the job is still open, with an acting district attorney doing the work. STAR ATHLETE IS DEPORTED TODAY Sent to Hungary, But Cannot Even Talk That Language Norfolk, Va. Dec. 13.—Reared in America and educated at the Holy Ghost Academy at South Bethelehem, Pa., where he was a star athlete, Jo- seph Pfer, aged 20, was deported yes- terday on the Italian steamer Cale- meris, He came to the United States from Hungary with his parents when he was two years old. His father was a steel work: and the family lived in South Bethlehem sixteen years. Two years ago his father died, and his mother wanted to go back to the land of her birth. Joseph accompanied her, intending the trip only as a visit. When he prepared to return to the United States, Pfer was refused a passport by the Hungarian govern- ment because he was af military age. He was forbidden to leave the country he said, but made his way to an Ttal- ian port, where he stowed away on board the British steamship Lord Radcliffe bound for Norfolk. Upon his arrival here in October, he was turned over to the immigration offi- clals and his status was found to be that of an alien who had entered the country illegally and he was ordered deported. His case was appealed to the department of labor and the state department, but the decision of local officials was sustained. Relatives in country sought in vain to have the edict set aside, “lI cannot speak the Hungarian language,” he exclaimed shortly be- fort his departure, "I know nothing of that countr 1 speak only English, and 1 owe allegiance only to the United States, where I was brought up and where my friends live.” He said he planned to work in Italy until he could arrange to return to| America in compliance with the immi- gration regulations, Discnss Reports that Germany May | Appeal for Assistance Paris, Dec. 13.—Delegates to the Paris meeting of the league of nations council showed the greatest interest today in the reports from Berlin that some of the political groups there may favor an appeal to the league for assistance in the financial rehabilita- | tion of Germany. It was recalled that the league assembly in a resoltuion had placed the technical machinery of the league at the disposal of the| powers at any time for the settlement | of the reparation or inter-allied debts questions. league leaders said the Geneva body would instantly step in if it re-| celved a call from the interested pow- ers and Germany should announce herself ready to accept the league's intervention.
