But inasmuch as General Sawyer has appeared before this committee and made a wholly unauthorized and erroncous statement concerning the cause of my resignation, I feel it my duty to state the facts briefly as fol- lows: “During the summer of 1922, after, I had served something more than a year, my heaith began to break and 1 desired to retire. This desire, ex- pressed not only to the president but to many others, did not take definite form until towards the end of the year 1922, when it became perfectly apparent to me that it would be ut- terly impossible for me to continue to administer the law relating to the Veterans' bureau on account of the constant interference on the part of General Sawyer. “In the month of December, 1822, and long before the president finally decided to issue his second temporary order stopping the delivery of goods at Perryville, I frankly told the presi- dent that I could not continue to serve if General Sawyer was to continue in office; and it became simply a choice between Sawyer and myself, and I relieve the president of any possible embarrassment by tendering my res- ignation, the date of which he in- stantly deferred for 60 days beyond the date suggested by me for it to become effective.” Examined by his counsel, James S. Easby-Smith, Forbes told in more de- tail the story of what he termed the interference of General Sawyer in the operation of the Veterans’ bureau. He quoted Sawyer as telllng one in- quirer: “I am the Veterans' bureau. Come and see me."” Forbes also asserted that Sawyer constantly opposed conferences of H by eating Constipation and the. toxic poison- ings that come from it not only take the enthusiasm out of life, making you depressed and physically and mentally dull—but they head you into diseases such as Bright’s, diabetes, rheumatism, ete. You can actually rid yourself of these dangers if you will EAT KELLOGG’S BRAN REGULARLY! —at least two tablespoonfuls daily; in chronic cases with every meal! Kellogg’s Bran is nature’s most wonderful food. It is scientifically prepared to relieve suffering humanity from constipation and it will do that as no other food can! Don’t take a chance of ‘‘getting away’’ with consti- pation—IT WILL GET YOU! Don’t ruin your health with pills and cathar- tics—they are as dangerous as consti- pation itself and give but temporary relief, at the very best! got his authority, the witness replied: “He always claimed he had author- ity from the president.” Pressed for more specific informa- tion, Forbes said he would like to be excused from mentioning President Harding. “If the president issued orders hampering bureau administration,” sald Senator Walsh of Massachusetts, “you should state it rather than take the responsibility upon yourself.” “I can say frankly,” the witness replied, “that Sawyer attempted to exercise more authority around Wash- ington than any senator and he suc- cessfully got away with it.” Forbes added that When he pro- tested to President Harding, the lat- ter told him Sawyer simply was get- ting information for him. * As chairman of the general hos. Gel health—Keep health—Feel fine %ollogg's Bran regularly! What you should do for your family and for yourself is to serve Kellogg’s Bran every«day, in any one of several attractive ways, and fight constipation as you have never fought it beforel AND YOU WILL WIN, In the first place, Kellogg’s Bran is delicious in its nut-like flavor, add- ing greatly to any cereal with which it is used. FEat bran as a cereal with hot milk, or mix it with hot cereal before serving. Another method is to cook Kellogg’s Bran with cereal. In each case add two tablespoonfuls of bran for each person. A popular way is to sprinkle bran on hot or cold cereal, Bran makes wonderful bakery products. Recipes are printed on every ge. Kellogg’s Bran is served in leading hotels, restaurants and clubs. It is sold by all grocers. The use of electric fans instead of the hand-pulled punkah, and of elec- tric lights instead of cocoanut oil lamps is rapidly increasing in con- servative India.
