TROOPS GALLED OUT AGAINST MINE MEN Drastic Action Is Taken in West Virginia Charlestown, W. Va., June 30.—Two companies of the National Guard were sent into the Cabin Creoy and Paint Creek districts early today to break up an incipient march against mines on Cabin Creek which had been oper- lt‘n‘ on an open shop basis, The troops were mobilized and dispatched op ‘order of. Governor Morgan after he recelved reports that bodies of men were gathering on Paint Creek and , marching. toward Dry Branch, Cabin Creek. Tate 'vesterday about 75 men gathered on Paint Creek and marched toward Dry Branch. They were re- ported to be on the property of the| Dry Branch Coal Co., two miles from the mining camp. Lieut Mac 3. Lilley of the ‘state police, with about b0 men, including the state police in that section under his command and & number of volunteers from the Dry Branch camps, went Into the hills to meet them. No firing or other indi- cations of fighting had been heard | from that direction. Decision ‘to dispatch the guardsmen was reached at a conference about midnight at Governor Morgan's office at which Adjutant Gen. J. H. Char- nock and Col. Jackson Arnold, head of the state police, were present. It was said the troops had gone into the hills with the intention of coming! up behind the marchers in the rough country, between Paint and Cabin creeks, Dry Branch residents believe the march was directed against the mines| of the Dry Branch Coal Co., the Wet Branch Mining Co., and the Coalburg Colliery Co. at Ronda, nearby. All have been conducted on an open shop basis since January 1. GRANTED DIVORCE. Mabel Lyons Clark of this city was granted a divorce in the superfor court in Hartford yesterday by Judge Kellogg on the grounds of desertion. She ntated that she had married Wal- lace E. Clark on August 14, 1902, and Agents For FLORSHEIM And EDUCATORS up to December 28, 1918, when he lat | her, she had to support him most of | the time, 8he was represented by Lawyer J, W, Coogan of Hartford, FREE STATERS MAKE APPEAL TO PUBLIC Proclamation Declares That Rebels Are Really Fighting to Bring England Back to Isle Dublin, June 30 (By Assoclated Press)—A manifesto to the people of Ireland issued by the provisional free state government, says “For 48 hours the soldlers of your arms have unflinchingly borne the brunt of battle against the forces of anarchy in your capittal. Some of them have given their lives and many others have been wounded in: the de- fense of your rights as citizens. “You are faced with a conspiracy whose calculated end is to destroy the treaty signed by your representatives end endorsed by yourselves, Under that treaty the government and con- trol of your country and its resources have been sur~amdered back to, you after centuries of usurpation. You are asked to reject this surrender and engage in hopeless and unnecessary war with Great Britain, “The people in the Four Courts say they are fighting for a republic. In reality they are fighting to bring the| British back, Remember, we ask no man or woman to yield up any ideal or principle, Liberty will be secured to all under constitutional guarantees but it will be a constitutional liberty and no man shall be permitted to do violence to the views of his neighbors or the will of the majority. “Least of all will profession ot ideals or principle be permitted as at excuse for undermining the peoples right to live their lives in their own way as long*as they do not trespast on the rights of others.” IS HONORED AT 80. NEW BRITAIN DAILY HERALD, FRIDAY, JUNE WILL WIN OR DIE, ('CONNOR ASSERTS [rish Rebel Leader Believed to Mean What He Says London, June 30 (By Associated Press)—Dispatches from Dublin re- port Rory O'Connor, the insurgent leader, as having declared he will fight until he s either victorious or killed and his record suggests the probabllity that he means what he says, If he goes down fighting it is impossible to predict the effect his dlmappenrnnco will have on the situa- tion, Some dispatches from Dublin em- phasize that if the government troops had been able to capture the Four Courts a couple of hours after the slege began the comparatively blood- less rebellion probably would have flickered out but the prolonged re- sistance of O'Connor's forces and the growing operations of their sympa- thizers in other parts of the city are reported to have an {mportant in- fluence in favor of the republicans, Another point much stressed is fhe increasing activity of the communists in support of the republicans. These, according to some reports, are acting under the instigation and guidance of a member of the I W. W. from America, who is rumored to be re- ceiving financial help from Moscow, Whatever. may be the truth of these later reports, some observers in Dub- lin notice a growing tendency of cer- tain classes to transfer their sympa- thies from the free state government to the republicans. The dangers threatening Michael Collins and the treaty party are grave- ly remarked in quarters altogether friendly to them and the possibility of an attempt to bring about a republi- can revolution with the help of the lowest section of the populace is seri- ously discussed.
