Effecting June 15 of a 10 per cent cut in hauling rates on iron ore from Lake Erie ports to the furnaces, was preceded by announcement of a sim- {lar decrease in transporting ore from the mines to the docks and aboard the ships and a slash of 121; per cent in vessel carrying c‘nr:f ef- fective July 1. As_a direct result the entire ore carrying fleet on the Great Lakes es- timated at approximately 400 freight- ers and 25 barges has been brought Into action; ore carrying railroads at the head of the lakes and at lower lake ports have increased their trains crews by 75 per cent. to full capacity employing thousands of men. Mines that were idle have either resumed operations or are preparing to, and, according to experts, indications are that when all of the new rates become effective July 1 this major mining and shipping industry in the lake re- glon will witness a whoeslale return to capacity. ‘Long lines of ore trains are eating into the huge stock piles accumulated at the mines and docks at Duluth, Su perior, Two Harbors, Minn, and Ash- land, Wis, are being jammed with loaded ore cars preparatory to the coming of the large flect For the first time since 1920 lead- ing employment agencies on the lakes rport expectancy that all available la- bor will be placed by ym\ 1 So great has become the demand for vessel space since the rduction in vssel carrying rates was announced that vessels and barges tied up at piers for 18 months are being pre- pared for service. FOREIGN AVIATORS NOT NEEDED NOW Japan Feels Confident Native Flying Instructors Competent To Handle Jobs Alone Tokio, June 30.—The naval de partment has notified the master of Sempill and British aviators brought hére to teach Japanese officers and men of the navy the art of flying, that their services will not be requir- ed after this year, in fact, most of the instructors expect m leave Japan early in the fall. The department is of opinion that the Japanese navy now has sufficient men to carry on this branch of the service without the aid of foreign in- structors. The Jatter have done good work here and contrary to those who thought the Japanese were not tem peramentally suited to flying have succeeded in producing quite a num- ber of expert aviators. They are not, according to one of the British avia- tors, quite as reliable in an emergen- ¢y as American or British aviators would be but general purposes are quite up to the best in America or Europe. They have good aerodomes, a fleet of aeroplane carriers and a considerable number of serviceable machines.
