New York, May 19.—Gordon Munce state amateur heavyweight boxing champion, caught a tartar last night in the intercity bouts at Madison Square Garden in the person of Jim Murphy of Penn State college. Murphy got the decision of the judges after four sizzling rounds, in which he outboxed and outpunched the champion. These two young giants, each six feet tall @nd weighing 200 pounds, waged a desperate battle from start to finish. At the end of the third round the judges were unable to select a winner and the referee ordered an extra round. Murphy usd a straight left in the final round with telling effect. He sup- plemented this with a right hook that had Munce tired and groggy at the sound of the bell. Both men were cut and bleeding.
