This home is now Below is the house in Inset is Grant as a Civil WOULD DEBATE ON SUNDAY BLUE LAWS May Decide Whether They Are Christian and American St. T.ouis, Mo., April 21.-~The Anti- Blue Tlaw league of America has challenged several reform organiza- tions to debate the subject, *“That Sunday Blue lLaws are American in principle and Christian in character,” at the.convention here, June 23, 24 and, of the Antt Blue law Jleague, which is to argue the negative side of the question. Tetters inviting representatives of the Lord’s Day Alliance, the Interna- tional Reform Bureau, and the Southern Methodist Sabbath Alliance to attend the convention have been sent by F. C. Dailey, national execu- tive secretary of jthe league. Copies *of the letters have been addressed to |z Rv. Harry I.. Rowbly, scretary of the Lord's Day Alliance, New York; Rev. Wilbur 1% Crafts, superintendent of the Tnternational Reform Bureau, Washington: and North W. Cooper, Nashville, Tenn., representing the Southern Methodist Sabbath Al- liance. A challenge to affirm the question at debate is included in the letter, which contains a declaration that the heads of the league will dishand the organization if the majority of the people hearing the debate side with the reform organizations. The letter, however, states that if the negative side of the debate should be upheld the reform organizations should ce; their activities for further Sunday closing Jegislation. “The time has come,” the letter adds, “to squarely define the issue for the citizens of the United States. We will have eminent clergymen, authors, scientists, inventors, artists and states men argue the negative side of the question. These persons are all mem- bres of the league.” Secretary Dailey said that the movement of the blue law advocates was gaining ground rapidly in sev- ‘eral states, and that Sunday closing laws are pending before the legisla- tures of seven sates. Crawford H. Ellis of New Orleans is president of the league, which which claims to have several hun- dred thousand members, including prominent persons in all parts of the country. The league is a nation-wide organization to oppose and prevent passage of local state or national blue laws. In 1914, the brew- ers paid duty on 56,000,000 barrels of beer, while in 1920, the amount has shrunk to 25,000,000 barrels.
