St. Petersburg, Fla., March 3.—A pelican, one of those huge, long- beaked marine birds that poise them- selves a hundred feet above the water, close their wings and with beaks open dive head foremost into schools of small fish, finished a golf game here recently “‘one down.” The Coffee Pot course is along the shore of Tampa Bay and on the eleventh hole is a small brackish lake forming a water hazard which must be crossed to reach the green. One member of a foursome drove from the tee and a strong wind rar- ried the ball into the lake. A peli- can flying lazily above the lake evi- dently took the ball bobbing on the | surface for a new variety of fish for he suddenly closed his wings, dropped with terrific speed, and gohbled {t. AS Knowledge of This or Other Cities Freely Dispensed Miss Mary " Curtin, and popular assistant sec of the Chamber of Commerce, has found herself in the position of gercral en- cyclopedia and information bLureau to the community since the recent ar- ticle in The Herald concerning the directories on file at the Commerce Chamber. Miss Curtin is in receipt of one or mare phone calls nearly every day from people who are look- ing for information Ask and Ye Shall Be Told. One day nol =0 long ago a woman's volce on the phone asked for the ad- dress of The —— e COMPANY. “What city is it in" the ques- tion. "I don't know, epliel the woman, “that’'s what I'm asking you to find out.” Instead of replying that it would take a force of clerks several the efficient days or a week going through some 300 or 400 directorics, Miss Curtn happened to remember the city in which the company was located, and the required street address was ob- tained from the directory of that city. The Wrong Number, Central. Another time a woman again called in and asked “What number is So- and-So of such and such a town?" After painstaking searching the direc- tory of the municipality in question until she found the street address, she was impatiently informed, “That's not what 1 want at all. I want their telephone number."” One Week Too Many. Another time a man, in all serious- ness, asked if there were 53 weeks in 1919. Puzzled for awhile as to whether or not the man was joshing her, or really did not know, Miss Curtin questioned him further. She found that the man had been paying an insurance premium weekly, it falling due on Wednesday. His pre- mium was to be paid ‘52 times a year. In looking up his records he found he had paid 53 premiums in 1919, This was not a job for the Chamber of Commerce, neither was the informa- tion desired contained in any city di- rectory. Instead of becoming sarcas- tic, Miss Curtin dug up an old 1919 calendar, and discovered that the year began and ended on Wednesday and the man had paid one extra pre- mium. New Directories. Directories were received this morn- ing from Bristol, Plainville, Terry ville, Ansonia, Conn., Patterson, N. J., Clinton and Lancaster, Mass., Derby, Shelton, Seymour, Conn., and Athol, Mass. 41c doz. Fresh eggs, —advt, Russell Bros. ILL AT AN OPERATION.
