Yisiting Nurse Assoclatlon Re- o¢ives Favorable Report At a meeting of the Visiting Nurse assoclation held yesterday afternoon in the Center church chapel, the In- fant Welfare committee, reported that infant mortality had droped nearly 20 per cent in this city last year. During the preceding year 100 babies out of every thousand died. The mortality rate for 1921 was 80.5. To a great extent the low rate is traceable to the efforts of the Visiting Nurse as- sociation. Officers were named as follows: President, Mrs. Harry M. Bates; vice- presidents, Mrs. G. W. Traut, Mrs, Howard §. Parsons, Mrs. H. C. M. Thomson, Mrs. George W. Corbin, Mrs, Walter H. Hart; secretary, Mrs. Charles 8. Bradley; treasurer, Mrs. Andrew 8. Parsons; directors, Mrs. A. J. Sloper, Mrs. R. N. Hemingway, Mrs. P. . McDonough, Mrs. W. F. Brooks, Mrs, M, D, Saxe. Mrs. Charles 8. Bradley as secretary and Mrs. Andrew S. Parsons, treasur- er, presented their annual report. Other reports were presented by the following committees: Iinance, Mrs. Howard S. Paying ‘Washington, Jan. 20.—The inter- cession of a visitor at the home of Mrs. Louis P. Gatti, wife of a wealthy retired commission merchant of this city, foiled the attempt of a ‘Hlack- hand” agent to collect from her §15,- 000 demanded in a note threatening the dynamiting of her home unless she complied withqut giving informa- tion of it to the police. A note, writtene in Italian, blood smeared and signed “the blacikhand” was recelved by Mrs. Gatti, it was revealed last October 20, demanding the $15,000 and instructing her to have it available for instant dellvery on future order. Terrified, she kept it secret until last night, when, while sitting in her parlor alone with a man relative, two boys came to the house as bearers of another “bluckhand” note demanding that the money be delivered to bearer. Observing Mrs. Gattl’s terrified state, the relative persuadcd her to reveal the cause, and after the money had been handed to the two hoys de- tained them while he got in touch with police headquarters. Although the boys returned to -deliver the money to the man who had handed them the note before detectives could reach the scene the *blackhander” left apparently frightened by the boys failure to return. PEARL MARKET Precious Stones Not Selling Like They Were After War. 20.—The pearl market of Paris which considers itself the market of the world, has suffered a slump. A necklace of Orient pearls, valued by the experts at 1,500,000 francs, has just been sold by public auction for only 466,000 francs. The slump is ascribed to general tightness of money, to the fact that war profliteers have now got rid of their superfluous millions and are not buying freely as in the days just after the war, and to various other causes, but not to the competition of Japan- ese cultivated pearls. French deal- ers continue to smile derisively when such a suggestion is made.
