LOCAL MAN TELLS OF TRIP T0 CAL Fred Knox and Family Make Journey in ,Au_tqmohile Tred Knox, formerly of Sherman Court, now of Los Angeles, Cal, has written relatives here of his trip by automoblle from this city to his pres- ent place, which covered a perlod of five weeks. Mr. Knox, accompanied by his wife, and five children, the youngest three years old, left New B tain on Seg- tember 6, in an Overland touring car, which was equipped with all the es- gentials necessary tre the trip esti- mated to be aboyt 4,000 miles, Oh the way, he congamed 240 gallons of gas and five gillons of oil. He re- lates some very interesting exper- fenced encountered on the journey, as follows: The Start. “After leaving New DBritain at 10 o'clock In the morning, we made ex- cellent time and arrived in New Jer- sey after dark, The next morning we headed for Philadelphia and fter- wards made our way on to Gettys- burg, Cumberland, Washington, later crossing the \Hm:hn'ny mountains, We camped on the top of the mountains and could look over the countryside for miles. The trip down the mouf- tains next day was one to be long re- membered. We journeyed on to Col- umbus, Ohio, then to Richmond and on to Indianapolis. Irom there we went to Greenville, Columbus, Kan- City, Emporia and. Dodge City. ‘While in Missouri, we struck a rainy season and got stuck several time; At night we camped out as usual and early next morning started for Chilacote. In this part of the country we bought watermelons for five and ten cents. We continued on to Las Anumus, Col, and thence to Trinidad. Troubles Encountered. “We went over the Raton Dass, where we reached an elevation of 8,872 feet above the sea level. As we reached the side of the Pass, our kteering gear gave way and one front wheel caved in. I repaired it and went on to Wagon Mound and then to Las Vegas. We spent some time in Santa Ie. Our next stop was at Los Lumas and then to Lunguna, where we saw our first dobe house. A rattlesnake crossed the lava field with us and disappeared. We continued on to Grant and Gallup and then to Hol- brook, Ariz. There we saw the petri- fied forest and the painted desert. At Holbrook we stocked up for supplies which were running mighty low, and started out for the Grand Canyon. We travelled until dark, and drawing up under a pine tree, stayed in the car until morning. Towards morning we could hear the coyotes howling. “We arrived in the Canyon at 10 o'clock in the morning. “Phe next day we headed for Williams, and about 20 miles outside of that place, our rear wheel caved in. 1 got a ride into Willlams with another tourist, and one back with another man. We drove on to Ashe Tork, which was a small town with six houses and two stores. I'rom there we went to Eelig- mas and encountered another monster rattler. We camped at night near Hackberry. We left in the morning for Kingman, Ariz, and then to Yuc- ca. Just outside of that place, as darkness was falling, a wild cat was sitting beside the roadway. I took a couple of pot shots at him with my revolver, but as he only looked mad at us, we put on the gas and went on. Arrives in California. “We camped on the banks of the Colorado outside of Topoc. Our next stop was at Needles, then to Ludlow, on to San Berandino, and finally to our destination, l.os Angeles. On the entire trip, the highest I ever paid for gas was 85 cents, and in some towns 1 got it for 16 cents. T like it very much down here, but we have too much rain. It rained a steady downpour from Saturday, until the following Thursday.” This interesting letter is only part of the many experlences . Mr. Knox and his family of adventurers encoun- tered on the trip. The American men and women must guard constantly against Kidney trouble, because we eat too much and all our food is rich. Our blood is filled with uric acid which the kid- neys strive to filter out, they weaken from overwork, become sluggish; the eliminative tissues clog and the result ia kidney trouble, bladder weakness and a general decline in health. When your kidneys feel like lumps of lead; your back hurts or the urine is cloudy, full of sediment or you are obliged to seek relief two or three times during the night; if*you suffer with sick headache or dizzy, nervous spells, acid stomach, or you have rheumatism when the weather is bad, get from your pharmacist about four ounces of Jad Salts; take a teaspoon- ful in a glass of water before break- fast for a few days and your kidneys will then act fine. This famous salts is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia, and has been used for generations to flush and stimulate clogged kidneys; to neutralize the aclds in the urine so it no longer is a source of irritation, thus ending bladder disorders. Jad Salts is inexpensive; cannot in- jure, makes a delightful effervescent lithta-water beverage, and belongs in every home, because nobody can make a mistake by having a good kidney @ushing any time. W. Campbell, director of the insti- tution. Although the program has not been completed, Dr, Campbell said recently, the results thus far confirm earlier conclustons that the clocks do run faster at night. The program included observations of three standard clocks and em- braced a list of stars whose positions | are already known with high precis- | ion, Each night's observations cx- | tended from 9 p. m. to § a. m. i “The ultimate cause of the phe- | nomenon is obscure,” Dr. Campbell said. “In the observations by fund- amental methods, where dependence is placed upon the constancy of the | clock rate through the 24 hours of | the day, more or le these errors | ximum \:lhu‘:« of between 0.02 and 0.03 seconds at | about six hours (mm the mean epoch of the observations Pure lard, 1ic 1b. —advt.
