King’s wharf where Lord Byng will land tomorrow morning and the streets' leading to the provincial leg- islative’ chamber, where he will be conducted for the installation cere- mony are gay with flags and bunt- ing. Scores of Canadian dignitaries were Dresent for the event which _occurs only once every five years. The popularity of “Byng of Vimy and Cambrai” leader of the Canadian corps during the campaigns of 1916 and 1917, was expected to earn him one of the warmest welcomes ever ex- tended to an incoming governor gen- eral. Lord Byng will spend tonight on board the Empress of France debark- ing for the installation ceremonies shortly before 11 o’clock tomorrow morning. The governor general's salute of 19 guns will be fired from the citadel as he steps ashore between the lines of a military guard of honor. He will be received by Premier Meig- han and his cabinet and immediately conducted to the legislative chamber. for the installation ceremony. He is scheduled to depart for Ottawa, the governor general’s seat at midnight. Lord Byng—then General Sir Julian Byng—Ileaped into fame in the spring of 1917 when he léd the Canadians in the storming and capture of the sup- posedly .impregnable German position on Vimy Ridge. In this engagement, Byng's troops, led by squads of battle tank: drove deep into the German lines b fore Cambrai, taking thousands of prisoners and threatening the entire *| German position in France. The Ger- mans_ struck back vigorously a few days later but were unable to regain all - of the ground Gen. Byng had taken. For .this exploit he was promoted to the rank of full general. Lord Byng. in his 59th year, is the seventh son of the Earl of Stafford.
