Most people believe the snake dance is.a Hopi rain dance. This is not coc- rect, acording to Ewmry Kopta, 2 sculptor, who claims that the cere nony is a form of Indian ancestor worship. Mr. Kopta has been living in Walpi village for seven years, and say the Hopis always hold their ran dances in June and July and the snake dances in August. Describing the ceremony, Mr. Kopti declared the dancers open the danc2 Ly stamping upon a plank laid over 2 rit. This is intended to notify the cead that the ceremony has begua. Beween 100 and 150 snakes are need- ed for the annual dances. 3 Out of the scores of Hopi traditions nas come a story telling of the origm of the snake dance, according to th2 scalptor. There he met and wed a maiden of a strange tribe and took her back to his Hopi eil- lage. The first children of the young couple were snakes, and the Hopis expelled the two from the village. Then the crops failed, the Indians sut- fered from starvation and the _oll vllage priest said the trouble was brought on by the expulsion. He de ~’ared rain would not fall or crops mature until the couple ‘was brought back. Acting on the priest’s advice, the ians searched the deserts for the .and eventually found them. Aft:r ‘r2ving the village, the woman hal borne huban children and these were brought back. But the snake chil- dien had glided off into the desert. In celebration of the couple’s re- turn, the Indians danced the first rnake dance and, since, the snal: children could not be found. they Llought all the snakes they ' could fifind to attend the ceremonies. PASSION PLAY T0 BE ENACTED SOON Citizens of Oberammergau Pre- pare for Historic Presentation Oberammehgau, July 29.—Since tha decision was made to give the delayed Passion Play in 1922, Oberammerganu nas taken on new life. Carpenters, painters and masons, maay of tham wearing long hair and beards which mark them as participsnts in pre- vious dramatizations of the passion of Jesus Christ. are restoring the open- air theater and villas which had no aitention during the war period. . Busy housewives are preparing heir homes for the reception of vis- itors who will fill the little village next summer. Scene painters are re- building and restoring the representa- tions of parts of the Holy Land where Jesus lived and died and rose again from the tomb. Needlewomen are fashioning robes for the apostles and scores of othar kiblical figures who participate in the play. Although the cast will not be clected by the directors of the plav until October, young women who have distinguished themselves in other re- ligious plays by the Oberammergan folk are fashioning simple robes suil- aple for the role of Mary in the hope ihat they will be chosen to enact the part of Jesus' mother, the highest honor which can come to an Oberam mergau woman. The great auditorium which shel- rers spectators of the Passion Play is a wooden structure supported by ste-l “The Place to Buy = Good Piece of Meat” 1s at B. Y. When the play is offered one end of the aud: lorium is removed entirely, and t siage stairs at some distance from the end of the building, in such a positioa ‘at the mountains furnish a back- sround for the setting. The audienca is entirely sheltered in case of rain and the main part of the stage has a glass roof. Even among the children of Obe:- ammergau the reverente for the Pas- sion Play is very marked and in imi tation of their elders they are con stantly acting in the hope of beinz cnosen for important roles in the pro- duction given every ten years. As good character is insisted upon as the hasic requirement for partici- pation in the play, the danger of be- debarred from a part in the his- toric spectacle is held constantly over the village children and is a far bette~ ccrrective influence than the bogeys mmvented for most children. -Cent Desserts Jiffy-Jell brings you a real-fruit dessert at a cost of 2 cents per serving.
