Rcently Albert Krippendorf, show manufacturer, and a dozen other res- ients of Grandin Road, the ulta-es. clusive residence thoroughfare of this ty obtained a temporary injunctio: estraining the Holy Angels church ic thet neighborhood from ringinz iis bells so early in the morning when the residents were at the top of their Jeeping form. II was set out in the petition that the vibration from the bell shook the surrounding homes. The church authorities rather thao contest the suit suggested the replac- ing of the bell with one of less vocit- erous tone and the suggestion was agreeable to the complainants, There fore the bell shopping tour. Thev went to a bell making foundry and lonked over the stock of bells that ranged from ‘mammoth church bells {0 cow bells. “This will show you what my ients have to contend ith.” said Col. non Ross. He struck a 700 pound beil with a sledge hammer. “This seems a liftle too gentle,” ra. marked the Rev. Father Eugenc Davis, pastor of the church, as he tapped a smaller bell with a maller. “The ringing of bells is a churen ceremonial and why have one that can not be heard throughout the parish?” None of the bells was found to su'table and the foundry company agreed to makek two or three bels weighing about one-third as much as {ne present bell and line them with uloy of copper to deaden the sharp- uess of the sound. They will be ready i ten days. But until they are in- stuiled the injunction remains effec- tice. Hlinois Governor Halts Execution of “Ragged Stranger” at Request of Legion. Chicago, July 29.—Carl O. Wander- er, who was to have been hanged to- day for the murder of a ‘“ragged stranger,” was last night granted a reprieve until September 30 by Gover- nor Small on the moticn of William McCauley, Illinois commander of the American Legion. Wandered, who was tried for killing his wife and the stranger in a fake hold-up in the ves- tibule of his home, had been a lieu- tenant in the army. McCauley and Wanderer's attorney, W. D. Bartholomew, asked the re- prieve so that a commission of alien- ists might determine whether Wan- derer is sa2ne. ‘Wanderer was in the death when news came. He smiled. “I guess my wife will have to wait a while before she sees me,” he said. When he was placed under arrest he said he wanted to be hanged and as quickly as possible that he might join his wife. “If Wanderer is sane, he should be hanged,” the American Legion com- mander said. “If he is insane, he should be locked up for life. Infor- mation has reached me which creates a doubt in my mind as to his san- ity.” . This information 'came from Dr. James Whitney Hall, alienist, who ex- amined Wanderer some time ago. Dr. Hall is so firmly convinced that the horrors of war have deranged Wan- derer’s mind that he appealed to the American Legion and to the gover- nor in the prisoner’s behalf. cell HONOR MEXICAN DEAD.
