He might well have gpoken only the precise truth. resolved to pick my way warily “Tell me something about it,” quietly. “You must realize, thgt it is terribly upsetting to be told that your home is sold- I've been very very—happy—there.” His arm tightened about me “I know. So have 1" he said tend- erly, but I clearly saw that thouzh he spoke the truth, yet the statement was a perfunctory one. That the Marvin home had been the scene of many of our happlest hours did not mean to him what it did to me. After all, it is the women of the world who rom tically cling to anniversaries places ahd personal possessions. it is a state of mind which I some bhusbands humor or tolerate abuse, according to their tempera- ments, but which very few understand. The Unexpected- “But it's foolish to let romance stand in the way of a good bargain,” Dicky went on, and his complacent alr of being extremely practical made me smother a laugh, business sense of any kind being one of Dicky's notable deficiencles. “I tell you that's a top- notcher price for the place what I told Alf, but he's got the ro- mance bug strong—‘won't grieve his bride,’ and all that sort of rot, and it soems Lella doesn't want to lose the place where they plighted their troth.” There was a mocking note in his volce which cut me to the quick had all I could do not to_withdraw myself from his encircling’arm. But 1 would not for the world have let him know that he had wounded me- Pride forbade it. But it galled me to know that Dicky was not considering my wishes as Alfred was Lella’s “So Alfred isn't going to sell,” commented, making my voice casual. “Do you realize that if we sell we will lose most delightful neighbors " “Yes, that's the chief drawback to the plan™ he admitted ruefully “Theyre the bulliest neighbors in the t ought to be more pleas- w with Leila and u know, of course, 1€ to make her home believe >ard them speak of it I returned, prevaricating, but not will- | ing to let Dicky see that I knewnoth- | ing of the plan with which he seemed to be perfectly familiar. Edith Fairfax to be constantly next door! That arrangement decidedly would not be “more pleasant’ for me! ‘With a sudden revulsion of feeling I realized that the Marvin house would indeed be mo longer home if day after day L had to see in Edith Fairfay's eyes the look which Dicky’'s proximity always calls therer Far, far better to do.as Dicky had proposed and sell the house. From that second I knew that 1 ‘would assent to Dicky's plan- But, above all things, I must not let him suspect that Edith Fairfax’'s proposed proximity had anything to do with it.
