There is to be erected a commem- orative monument to the fame of the officers and men of the Royal Naval Air Service, the Royal Flying Corps, the Australian Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force, including the of- ficers and men who joined the force from the overseas dominians. In this last class are many Americans who enlisted in the Canadian armies be- tore America got into the war. It also is proposed to . establish places of residential education for the children of airmen and to make al- Jowances for the children of officers, and generally to care for disabled, sick and infirm officers and airmen and their dependents. Believing that many Americans will be interested in the memorial, the air attache of the British embassy in Washingtan, Commodore L. Charlton, will furnish them any desired infor- mation. —— g CANDY BEATS POTATO. Gum Drop Used As Oil Can Stopper, With Spuds So Costly. Columbus, Ind., July 9.—The gum drop has replaced the potato as a stopper on the oil can in Columbus. Grocers no langer can afford to let even the smallest spud go for that use when they are selling for 12 1-2 cents per ‘pound. A local grocer introduced the gum drop as a stopper here recently when he prevented a customer from helping himself to a potato for that purpose. The candy was much cheaper, he said. TAKE WHISKEY OFF FREIGHT. Brockville, Ont., July 9.—Some time in the night between the Brockville yard and what is known as “the deep cut,” one mile east of the town, thir- ty-five cases of whiskey were removed from a car of an eastbound freight train, and detectives have been unable to locate them. Owing to a stiff grade trains move slowly, leaving Brockville for Montreal. The goods were, it is said, apparently lowered from the car by means of a rope. Apparently mort than one man was implicated. SEE OUR WINDOW SPECIALS ;7 SEE OUR WII SHOP IN THE MORNING POSSIBLE! ‘ By So Doing You Will Help Our A Clerks, and Get Quicker Service. venience.
