They do not, belleve that Taft, if he was guilty of the procedure al- leged in the communication, would have taken the woman to the Kens- ington avenue spot. He would have || been suspicious of the trip and, if it was taken, would have been on his guard and looking for trouble. All indications are that he was shot down without suspecting that his passengers were otherwise than or- dinary “joy riders.” Then, too, the authorities are of the opinion that an amateur in crime, especially murder, could hardly have escaped from that locality without detection. A woman of position so- cially with a family could hardly have done the deed “without show- ing great .agitation that would ‘have made her noticed by train or trolley crews. She would hardly have been able to walk or ride to a place ‘of safety ‘without being observed. +The murder bears many cations of a professional ‘“‘gunman’ or ‘one hardened in crinfo to satisfy. the authorities that an amateur or one unaccustomed to deeds of vie- lence is’ the actual’ slayer. - Possibly, they believe, such a woman as . is mentioned in the communication is implicated and instigated the tragedy. Despite official reticence, it became known today that a number of finger print experts are working on the case, have secured all data available and anticipate a solution’ ultijnately. Whether these finger 'print experts have been retained by State’s Attor- ney Alcorn, the police or members of Taft's family have not ascertained. Tt is indicated today that an attempt will be made to get finger print re- productions from the paper upon which the communication was writ- ten and compare them with the im- print found upon the revolver used in the murder. In the minds of a number of the officials, the communication received is the work of a mentally unbalanced person, the real slayer, who ired to divert pursuit and suspicion‘ef 'a “pusybody” desiring to create a new sensation and give a new angle to the mystery. Similar communicationis are nearly - always. received bv the au- thorities in connection with the at- tempted ‘solution of practically every mystery. Crime, similar to the slay- ing of Taft, always draws the at- tention of cranks, the morbidly curi- ous and amateur sleuths, the same as sugar and water will attract files. LURE OF “MOVIES” BREAKS UP HOME Victor Davis, Charged With Non- Support, Blames Silent Drama For His' Troubles. Alleging that®his wife is too fona of the “movies" - persists in attend- ing them in “the .company of other men and constantly frequents a Main street restaurant where - men -of doubtful reputation congregate, Vics tor Davis defended non-support chargey before Judge John H. Kirk- ham in' police court today. Proba- tion Officer Edward C. Connolly said that he has tried to adjust the do- mestig troubles satisfactorily but that both Mr. and Mrs. Davis are “unrea- sonable” and he has been unable to bring about desired results. Davis agreed to assign $5 from his pay en- velope at the Stanley Works weekly to Mr. Connolly and the case was '| continued for one month to determine the success of this arrangement. Davis alleged that his wife has “spirited away” their fifteen month old child, that he is not allowed to see it and does not know where it is. He contended that she has a weakness for attending the ‘“movies”, has neg- lected to get his meals and does not attend to the house as a dutiful wife should.
