Everybody likes to be well thought of and to do this successfully one must have and develop positive traits of character. The best way to attain this object is by daily introspection, watching ones daily habits. Everyone is a branch of habits either good or bad. One cultivates a personality by building character which is built on habits. The speaker defined reputation and character, reputation being what we are thought to be and character what we are. The essentials in salesmanship are to secure attention, create confidence and a desire to buy. These, however, | are but a few of the requisites in salesmanship, which to the speaker’s | mind is one of the most wonderful things in the world. The class in salesmanship at the Hartford Y. M. Mrs. Prince was one of the first to undertake the movement and got very little encour- the store managers. The managers took the ground that they grew up behind the counter and that experience with the public was the only requisite necessary to make a good salesman. Then she set {o work to prove that the rank and file could be improved by training and went into a store to sell goods, finally gaining the co-operation of the lead- ing store managers in Boston. Mrs. Prince then described the formation of her first class in sales- manship. She advertised for girls and secured a number who were out of work, not the most promising mater- ial. At length she got a chance for these girls on a Monday when the Boston stores are busiest. Their work at once impressed the store managers and they agreed to take the girls three davs a week and allow them to attend school three days with full pay. Next she took girls directly from the stores to the school, this at the suggestion of the merchants them- selves. Now the school is maintained permanently, there being three terms, the first beginning in September last 12 weeks, the second beginning in January last three months and the third starting April 1 continues three months. £ The next’siep was to e:tablish a training sthool for teachers and fin- ally the taking up of the work by the public schools.
