HAS 17 RELATIVES IN HAISER'S ARMY William Ritter - Says Germans Cannot Be Beaten By Allied Foes A While everyone in New Rritain is more or less interested in the Euro- Pean war, it is probable that few are so deeply interested as Willam Ritter, cretary and manager of the Cremo Brewing company. Mr. Ritter has seventeen near relatives fighting with the German army. In a talk with a Herald man, Mr. Ritter said he wished to emphasize the fact that Germany cannot be beat- en and that the reports of losses suf- fered by the Teutonic cause are gross exaggerations. He says he is in- formed by letters from relatives in Germany that the Kaiser has 4,000,- 000 more trained soldiers he can rush into action should their co-operation be necessary. In the large cities a stranger from another planet would “"hardly ‘know that Germany was en- gaged in war, these letters say.:Busi- ness is being carried on-as usual and the only evidences that.the country is at: war are ‘occasional soldiers and many former soldiers strolling around Jon wooden legs. There is sufficient food in Germany to last a whole year and while it is not of the variety that one would choose had he his own se- lection, it is substantial and sufficient for the needs of the populace. He was engaged with the army on -the western front and was sent out with three companions on g scouting expe- dition. “When the four dd not return within a reasonable time, a search was made. The relief party found three of the party lying side by side on the ground. Two were dead but, the third had sufficient vitality to tell his story. The four scouts had been surrounded by a detachment of Brit- ish cavalry and while they put up a good fight they were forced to suc- cumb to superior numbers. The last seen of Mr. Ritter’s cousin was when he dashed through the surrounding cavalrymen. It was not known wheth- er he was killed or captured. His wife is frantic with worry and four children are anxiously awaiting the return of their father. If it was known for a certainty that he was dead his wife could bear it with Spar- tan stoicism, in a style that has char- acterized all the German women who have been forced to give up their loved ones. But it is the uncertainty that is wearing down her spirit and mind. Another relatve that has been de- Hvered to the insatiable man of Mars is a nephew, nineteen years of age. This youth was the youngest of a fam- ily of four or five hoys. IIe had si- ASK FOR and GET HORLICK S THE ORIGINAL MALTED MILK Cheap substitutes cost YOU same price lently watched his older brothers march away at the bugle’s call and he determined that he, too, would go to the defense of the Fatherland. Be cause of his youth and the fact that he was the youngest boy of the fam- ily his parents raised strenuous objec- tion. They wished him to pursue his studies at a college he was attending. But he was unwilling that his brothers should lay down their lives on the altar of patriotism while he remained idly at home and he informed his par- ents that he would end hs own life if he was not permitted to go to the defense of the colors. Stops Eight Bullets. His desire for action was gratified soon after his enlistment. His regi- ment was sent to the eastern front, against the Russian army in Poland. In a letter home he told of how he as- sisted in a charge against the Russian trenches. At the signal the men leaped from their ditch and dashed at the Russiahs. They had not gone far when he was brought down with a bullet in his shoulder. For an hour he lay on the ground conscious but unable to move because of the sheet of bullets that whistled over his head. Most of the time he lay with his face in the mud. Several times he shifted his position to become more comfort- dble but he was forced to abandon this plan as he stopped a bullet each time he moved. In all, eight bullets found lodgement in his body. "Eventually he was rescued and sent to a hospital, which had formerly been a theater. Hé was sent home on a four weeks' fur- Jough but the call was still strong in his blood and at the end of ~ three weeks he went back to the trenches: Last October he was in a charge against the Russians and that was the last heard of him. His relatives know | found to contain over 41 per cont. of | not whether he was killed or made captive. Mr. Ritter is greatly exercised over the recent decision of the government { which prohibits .the sending of food to Germanv by parcel post. He be- lieves it would be more human if the government stopped the export of am- munition and guns and permitted food to be sent. Recently Mr. Ritter sent 110 pounds of coffee to relatives by parcel post but he is not certain whether it arrived at its destination. GOVERNMENT SEIZES FAKE MEDIGAL CURES Preparations Containing Much Alcohol Regarded as Harmiul Washington, D. C., Dec. 20.—Action | against several so-called idney | cures” has recently been taken under | the Food and Drugs Act by the Unit- | ed States Department of Agriculture. In one case the shippers of a prepara tion labeled as “A Sure ‘ure For Bladder and Kidney Trouble” were prosecuted on the charge of fals and fraudulently misbranding the y duct. They pleaded guilty and sweie fined $25 and costs by - the - court. | This particular kidney ‘‘cure was | alcohol. Allenberg & Meister, | Sole Agents, Memphis, Tenn.” An analysis of the product showed that it contained no material amount of either dill or phosphate. In another case 48 bottles of art’s Buchu and Jupiter Compound prepared by the Stuart Manufacturing Company, Atlanta, Georgia, were seized. The court issued a decree of condemnation, forfeiture, and destruc- tion on the ground that the claims | upon the label were misleading, fulse, and fraudulent. On this label (he manufacturers recommended their product as a remedy for a great vari- ety of kidney and bladder diseases.and stated that the medicine contained 16 per cent. of alcohol. According to the medical experts of the Department, alcohol is il’!'lmnt‘ and is dangerous in many cases of | kidney disease. For this reason many physicians advise their patients u- bladder trouble to abstain from the | use of alcohol even in moderate quan- tities.
