Tokio, May 6, 9:15 p. m.—Baron Kato, Japanese foreign minister, is understood to have informed the am- bussadors of other powers that the ultimatum to China, which expires at 6 p. m., Sunday, was accompanied by additional modifications of Japan’s demands, notably the dquestion re- lating to munitions and advisers which interested the United States. It is general opinion in diplomatic circles tonight that China will submit. Meanwhile Japan is making extensive preparations for a possible rupture. ‘Warships and transports are held in readiness for instant action, Jap- anese who have large business inter- ests in China, fearing a forced exodus of Japanese employers, are sending foreigners to China to look after their affairs. Guided By Justlce. The impression prevails that the in- to China in the belief that the lasting interests ‘of the empire could best be served by convincing the powers that Japan is guided by a spirit of justice and a desire for the preservation of peace in the orient, AUSTRIA MAKES FINAL PROPOSALS TO ITALY Hopes of Peaceful Scttcment of Ditferences Fading Specdily. Paris, May 7, 4:30 a. m.—A Havas despatch from Rome says the Aus- trian ambassador is reported to have handed to Foreign Minister Sonnino, at a conference yesterday afternoonm, the Vienna cabinet’s final proposals to Italy containing the extreme con- | cessions the dual monarchy is willing to make. While the utmost secrecy is observed regarding these conces- sions, Austrians and Germans in Rome have lost confidence in a fa- vorable outcome of the negotianons Prince Von Beulow the German am- bassador, called upon Baron Sonnino yesterday afternoon. Preparing For Attack. Paris, May 7, 5:20 a. m.—Austria is continuing to make extensive prepar. ations’ for defense against'a possible attack by Italy, acording to a despatch to the Petit Parisien . from . Turin. Railway service was suspended for six hours last Friday and Saturday at Graz and Laybach to permit the pas- | sage of military trains carrying artil- lery and ammunition to Triest. Considerable German forces are said to be at Graz awaiting transpor- tation to Zamb Croatia, and thence to Bosnia and Dalmatia. German School Closed. Rome, via Paris, May 7, 4:35 a. ro. —Upon receipt of a despatch from Berlin the German school in this city suddenly was closed yesterday after- noon. HAPPIEST TIME IN LIFE. Charlton Declares Regarding Stay in Asylum Awaiting Murder Trial. Rome, May 6, via Paris, May 7.— “I shall' remember the time I have spent here as the happiest in my life,” 'was the assertion made by Por- ter Charlton in reply to a question as to whether he was being well treat- ed at the asylum where he is in cus- tody awaiting trial on ‘the charge of murdering his wife, He has prepared a long statement in h‘s own defense, written in Italian. Charlton's examination by expert alienists has been virtually completed. Dr. Valtorta, retained by the defense, has come to the conclusion that be- cause of nervous excitement Charlton was entirely irresponsible when he killed his wife. Dr. Falciola, ap- pointed by the court, has decided, on the contrary, that he was only partly irregponsible. In view of this dif- ference of opinion a third expert, probably Prof. Maggiotto, director of the asylum in which Charlton is con~ fined, will be appointed. He probably will require two months more for his examination, in which case the trial will not begin before December. The foreign office said, in issuing a long communication covering the entire negotiations with Japan, that no further statement would be given out either today or tomorrow. The review of the egotiations explains that Jspan feels justified in resorting to an ultimatum, as the foreign office “De- sires the world to become cognizant’” of its reasons for ‘taking so important a step, The officials explain that the deeision was reached only after ma. ture deliberation by the cabinet, elder statesmen and Emperor Yoshihito himself, - Japan’s Program Arranged. .
