Semple, Jr.. Speaks at Grammar School This Afternoon. William A. Semple Jr., manager of the New Britain telephone exchange, gave an interesting illustrated lecture in the Grammar school auditerium to the pupils of the school this afternoon on “The Story of the Telephone.” He gave a history of the invention and growth of the 'phone up to the present day and also showed some unique pictures taken while the linemen were stretching the wires across the Arizona desert for the trans-conti- rental ‘phone. Camera, FORMER LOCAL MAN IN BAD AUTO SMASH William Raphnel of Waterbury Kills Child—Woman's Condition Serious. Willlam Raphel of Waterbury, for- merly of this city,- is out on §$5,000 bonds pending trial in the June term of the superior court for running down a woman and child in that city Saturday evening. The child, which was about six ars old, died of its injuries yesterday, while the woman lies in a precarious condition in a hospital in Waterbury and there is slight hope far her recovery. Mr. 'Raphael is the son of M. Raphael of this city of the concern of M. Raphael & Son. He is well known in New Brifain, where he managed the shoe department of the Main street store for a number of years. He was very popular with the clerks as well as the customers while here. A few years ago his father placed him at the head of the Waterbury branch and he proved to be a capable manager, increasing the business of the concern exten- sively. It is said that Mr. Raphael did not like the Brass City, how- ever, and was contemplating to sell out and move here where he could live with his folks. William Raphael was arraigned in the Waterbury police court vester- day morning and probable cause was found to bind him over ta the June term of the supcrior court on a bail of §5,000. A, R., will entertain its many friends at an open meeting and social in the Grand Army hall. An inter- esting program has been provided and all are invited. As this will probably be the last open meeting of the scason it is theught that there will be a large at- tendance. For the past two years the local veterans have made a practice of holding open meetings during the fall, winter and spring months and the interest aroused has added much to the high standing of the organiza- tion. The bazaar is for the benefit of the do- mestic science department of St. Mary’s parochial school. The enter- tainment this evening will consist of a comic sketch, “Timothy Delano’s Courtship,” which will be staged by parish talent.
