FACTORIES TO MAKE SHORT SHUT DOWNS Most of Manufacturers Will Close Up for the Fourth of July Only. In spite of the present slight de- pression in business the chief manu- facturing concerns of the city do not, intend to make long shut downs over the Fourth of July. The longest will be that of the Stanley Rule and Level company, which will close ‘for ten days. The majority of the factories will, however, close for the Fourth only. The Union Manufacturing company expects to shut down for thé one day. The Traut and Hine Manufacturing company, according to Superintendent E. N. Humphrey, will close for the Fourth only. Landers, Frary and Clark, accord- ing to Vice President Joseph F. Lamb, will ‘close for a week beginning Fri- day night. North and Judd’s, according to Vice President H. C. Noble, will also, in all probability, close for the week. Treasurer L, Hoyt Pease says that ! the Stanley Works, according to cus- tom, will close just for the day. The Corbin Cabinet Lock division of the American Hardware corpora- tlon, according to Assistant Secretary Joseph E. Latham, will close Thurs- day night for two days. Superin- tendent Willlam Scott of the Russell and Erwin division says that they will shut down .for one day. The P. & F. Corbin division will close for two days beginning Thursday night, according to Superintendent J. R. Fletcher. The Corbin Screw division will close for the Fourth only, according to Man- ager Charles Glover. The National Spring Bed company will shut down from Friday noon until Monday, according to Otto Burkhardt, assistant secretary. Guilford, July 2.—The tug Harold of the Thames Towboat company, which went ashore on the bar at the north end of Faulkner's Island late Tuesday night while bound with two to New York, has been hauled off and has returned to New London.
