HETHERINGTON, EDITOR. SUBSCRIPTION RATES. Jne gear $ix moacne .. Three monuos . Delivered lnywhere within the "Imits of the City of Lakeland for 10 tents a week, From the same oflice is 1ssued THE LAKELAND NEWS, 4 weekly newbpaper giving a resume of local matters crop couditions, county affairs, etc. Sent anywhere tor $1.00 per year. Speaking of sand-oil roads, whose praises have been sung and merits urged on the strength of that bit of road in front of the hotel in Eustis, the Bradford County Times comes along with some newly discovered testimony which may have bearing on the issue. That paper says: “We have it from a party who travels over the Eustis road every day, that the sand ofl road has to be continually covered with a coat- ing of sand to keep it from picking up and sticking to the part wheels. It this is true, Aind we have no reas- on to doubt our authority for the above statement, would it be advis- able to put down several miles of this kind of road, only to find an elephant on your hands?” it s el HE DENIES THAT FLORIDA HAS SUPERIOR OPPORTUNITIES A subscriber of The Metropolis down State objects to our saying that Florida offers more opportuni- ties to farmers than other States can offer, says he has resided here for over thirty years, and cites in- stances of persons coming from other States and being compelled to go back because they could not get accommodations at {Florida banks to enable them to put their crops on the market, and saying, too, that Florida merchants do not bduy Flor- ida produce. If the condition de- scribed is true of the entire State, then there is something radically wrong with Florida. ‘Every mer- chant and every banker in the State {8 as much interested in the develop- ment of the State agricultnrally as they are in anything upon whici witally depends the future of Flor- ida.—Jacksonville Metropolis. Even if this were true, it wonld not invalidate the statement of the Metropolis that Florida offers more opportunities to the farmer than other States. The troubles referred to by the subscriber of that paper are in their character local and transient and can and will be rem- edied sooner or later wherever they exist, but the farmecrs’ ‘“op- portunities” are in the soil and cl!- mat2, the wonderful possibilities for diversification to be found in no other State and the great advan- tages of a virtually new country with large areas of comparatively cheap land. As for the complaint of the Me- tropolis subscriber that people can’t get accommodations at [Florida banks, that is of course not true of all our banks. There are banks and banks here, as in all other States, and the ‘“‘accommodation’” is easier to get in some than in others; but it is not at all probable that any intelligently-managed bank with money to lend is going to hoard it in preference to letting it out on good security at a fair rate of in- terest. And this is especially true right now when, as Secretary Mec- Adoo informs us, there is more money in the country than there ever has been at any period of its history and all danger of a panic has passed. The Metropolis sub- scriber perhaps didn’t have the right kind of security or he tried the wrong bank. 1t is certainly unjust that all the banks in Florida should be criticised for the alleged shortcomings of a few. ,As for Florida merchants not buy- ing Florida produce, we have heard that complaint made before, and it is a condition to be remedied by persistent publicity and demonstra- tion to the merchant that it is to his advantage to encourage home in- dustries. This is especially true of Florida canned goods. Canning our home-grown fruits and vegetables should be an enormous industry in this State, and it is clearly to the interest of every merchant in Flor- ida to encourage it. There couldn’t be a plainer proposition ‘of profit and betterment to all concerned than building up our canning indus- try by the development of a big home market. It is econcmic folly and a reproach to our intelligence and enterprise to import ome can of stuff into [Florida than can be better raised here —— g This talk about Col. houn, deputy customs dollector Tampa, losing his job wnen the headquarters are removed from Jacksonville to the latter city will not amount to anything we suspect. Secretary Bryan is a long-time per- sonal friend to Colonel Calhoun and he got the Colonel that job. The latter’s efficiency in the position has not been questioned and we don’t doubt that he will see to it that the Colonel keeps it, or gets scmething equally as good, if not better. Wil- liam Jennings Bryan has quite la little “pull” at Washington and he has a fine habit of sticking to his friends. at INFORMATION BUREAU Mr. D. A. RESULT OF ZEPPELIN BO MBS IN ANTWERP, AND INVENTOR OF THIS DREAD MACHINE OF WAR Here is proof of the deadly character of the bomb dropped from a Zeppelin in the dead of night, for it is a photograph of the ruin caused by the Zeppelins which dropped enormous bombs on \nt\\crp The building blown to pieces here was within a short distance of the royal pal- ace in which King Albert, the queen, and their children were sieeping at the time. The peo- ple of Antwerp were certain that the aviator was making an at- tempt to drop a bomb on the pakace. The incident so fright- ened the queen that she took her children and sought safety in lingland. On good authority the state- ment has been made that it is the plan of the German general staff to use Zeppelins in the same way when the bombard- ment of Faris begins. They think that if a few bombs are dropped while they are throwing in enormous shells from thelr sixteen inch siege guns the French will soon- capitulate. e —————————————————————————— LOST WEIGHT STEADILY Lakeland Resident in a Bad Way Kidney disease in certain stages is slow poisoning and in any stage is too dangerous to be neglected.
